Yes, we began this church year anew just a few days ago on the first Sunday of Advent, which happened to be the last Sunday in November. We have just a few more weeks to go before we welcome again the Christ Child into our hearts at Christmas.
On this first day of December, I mark my one-year anniversary as your Bishop Provisional. I remember December 1, 2021, as if it were yesterday — my first walk up the stairs to my office, meeting and lunch with the staff — the months have flown by! If you were at convention a few weeks ago, you heard about many of the changes we have made here in the diocese during the past year. Some were small, some were large — but changes were made in the:

- Ordination process — streamlining and making clearer the process, as well as standardizing dates for ordinations. Ordinations were moved away from convention.

Transition process — starting as soon as a Rector or Priest-in-Charge announces that they are leaving. Also, we instituted a standardized leave-taking policy for clergy. In addition, we will be rolling out a new offering for those who are newly ordained or new to the diocese: Beginning Well, which will help in introducing and acclimating people who are newly ordained or new to their congregation (from outside of the diocese) to the who’s and how’s and why’s of diocesan life.
- Planning for convention began back in January with an expanded group to work on the details of convention.
- Confirmations were moved from area-wide back into the congregations. If a congregation is not scheduled for a visit from me this year, I have been able to come on a Friday evening, Saturday morning, or Sunday afternoon to ensure that confirmands receive the sacramental rite of confirmation in a timely manner.
- We instituted Deanery picnics, which were a BIG hit!
- We created new or revitalized existing committees in the diocese with a focus on proactive ministry.
- I was able to visit every congregation in the diocese and spend time with their leadership. This gave me a good overview of the many gifts and ministries going on all through the Diocese of West Missouri!

As we begin this new church year, we will be embarking on larger changes: | |
- Using the soon-to-be revised mission and vision statements of the diocese (thanks to the work of Amanda Perschall, those in attendance at this year’s convention, and the Diocesan Council), we will strip the budget down to zero. We will rebuild the budget based on the priorities coming out of the groups seeking diocesan funding as they tie their work to the mission and vision statements of the diocese.
- Clergy and lay compensation will be analyzed by a team to determine adequate compensation levels.
- As we review the budget and compensation, we’ll also look at the congregational assessment formula to see if it needs to be adjusted.
- We’ll also work with newly formed or revitalized committees to ensure that their work is known to you all, and that their work, along with all diocesan work, moves to be more proactive rather than reactive.

Sí, comenzamos este nuevo año eclesiástico hace unos días en el primer domingo de Adviento, que resultó ser el último domingo de noviembre. Sólo nos quedan unas semanas antes de recibir de nuevo al Niño Jesús en nuestros corazones en la Navidad.
En este primer día de diciembre, celebro mi primer aniversario como su Obispa Provisional. Recuerdo el 1 de diciembre de 2021 como si hubiera sido ayer - la primera vez que subí las gradas a mi oficina, la reunión y el almuerzo con el personal - ¡los meses han pasado volando! Si estuvieron en la convención hace unas semanas, ustedes escucharon sobre muchos de los cambios que hemos hecho aquí en la diócesis durante el último año. In the wake of the gun violence that is plaguing our communities, state and country, and as promised earlier this year at the Prayer Vigil against Gun Violence, I’ve asked the Peace and Justice Committee to focus on responses to gun violence. Firearms are the leading cause of death for children and teens in Missouri. Every year in the United States, 350 children aged 17 and under gain access to a firearm and unintentionally shoot themselves or someone else. Nearly 700 more die by suicide with a gun each year. The Be SMART program is the first major offering of the Peace and Justice Committee — it is a work we all must engage in — every church, every parishioner to ensure gun safety in our homes and in our communities. Please join us in this much-needed education for our communities.
We can work together to protect our children. The Be SMART program encourages parents and caretakers to “Be SMART” and take these five simple steps to help prevent shootings by and of children: Secure all guns in your home and vehicles; Model responsible behavior around guns; Ask about the presence of unsecured guns in other homes; Recognize the role of guns in suicide; Tell your peers to be SMART.
A communications toolkit is ready for your use, full of social media and bulletin graphics, articles for your newsletter, handouts, and directions for how to share the message of Be SMART with your congregation. Additionally, volunteers are ready to give a 20 minute Be SMART presentation to your church, Adult Formation, Children’s Formation parents, or any other group. A raíz de la violencia con armas que está asolando nuestras comunidades, el estado y el país, y como se prometió a principios de este año en la Vigilia de Oración contra la Violencia con Armas, he pedido al Comité de Paz y Justicia que se enfoque en respuestas a la violencia con armas. Las armas de fuego son la principal causa de muerte de niños y adolescentes en Missouri.
