At the Close of a Difficult Week, Shabbat Shalom

I have seen so many words over the past week, yet I struggle to find my own.

Every statement, every headline, every social media post, every conversation that tries to document what happened in Israel in the last six days cannot fully capture the shock, sadness and anger we feel, nor the resolve and renewed pride we find in our Jewish identity.

NCJW/Essex stands with Israel. This week we joined with our fellow community groups, synagogues and other organizations to rally in solidarity with Israel and to condemn evil, violence, antisemitism and hate of all kinds. Many of you are deeply engaged and committed to these efforts, finding both comfort and strength in our collective voice. As the war progresses, there will be more to do, and we will do it together.

For now, we rediscover clarity in our purpose: to create opportunities for community and connection and to continue the unwavering pursuit of our mission. Since its founding, NCJW/Essex has focused on the most vulnerable in our community, guided by our Jewish values to improve the lives of women, children and families and safeguard individual rights and freedoms.

Even though the world we knew has changed so dramatically, the need close to home remains. We will move forward with compassion, perhaps cautiously at first, staying connected to those Jewish values and focused on the impact we know we can make.

Shabbat arrives again this evening, and as it does every week, brings with it a reminder to pause our daily routines and reflect. In whatever way you observe, I hope on this Shabbat you will say a prayer for all the lives lost, for everyone near and far who is suffering, and for a world where we embrace the best of humanity and work together for peace.

Ufros aleinu sukkat shlomecha

ופרש עלינו סכת שלומך

Spread over us Your shelter of peace

NCJW National Responds

NCJW Inc., our national organization, has offered numerous ways to take action:

Thanking elected officials who have expressed support of Israel in this war is one way to make your feelings known.

Donating to NCJW’s Israel Granting Program Emergency Appeal supports their partners in addressing the most urgent needs, while planning for the deep and long crisis ahead.

Urging the Senate to confirm the U.S. Ambassador to Israel as quickly as possible.

NCJW also hosted a conference call for its advocates and members on Tuesday, calling the attack by Hamas on Israel "brutal" and "terrorism" and creating a space to mourn the senseless loss of life and begin to process our collective trauma.
