When Saint Paul wrote to the Philippians (2:4), he included this exhortation, “Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others.”
Some from this synod are asking about the return to in-person worship settings. In years past, following the summer months, many congregations traditionally have filled their calendars, classrooms, and sanctuaries with various new ministries and educational programs. However, the ongoing news regarding the way the COVID-19 virus continues to proliferate in our state cautions us against activities that will accelerate the spread of the contagion. The latest counsel from health professionals tells us that a return to in-person worship, as well as many other indoor activities, may not happen safely until well into next year. The upcoming “normal” flu season, exacerbated by the continuing presence of the COVID-19 pandemic, will likely expect extra necessary precautions to insure that our worship and other activities do not contribute to the transmission of these viruses to anyone, especially those who have been identified as the most vulnerable.
In California, Governor Newsom has initiated an interactive website that allows us to check current restrictions for gatherings/businesses in our different counties. The website is https://covid19.ca.gov/safer-economy/. We are all encouraged to work with these guidelines, local county health officials, and the leadership of our congregations as we make decisions about the ways we will continue to be in Christ-centered ministry one with another and within our communities. It is very important that we make wise and faithful decisions regarding virtual worship, as well as any considerations of returning to in-person worship, whether indoors or outdoors. We always want to be mindful of the witness we give to our surrounding communities as we care for and love our neighbors. If and when it is decided in your locale that you are able to appropriately and safely gather for in-person worship, please remember those who may not be able to or who may not feel comfortable to gather in-person for health reasons or for other concerns. Even when the time comes that we return to gathering in some form of in-person worship, we encourage the congregations of the Southwest California Synod to continue providing online worship opportunities so all may be welcomed, blessed and uplifted by the Word of God in worship and Christian education.

Note: At a meeting this morning with 18 people who are participants in the Los Angeles Council of Religious Leaders (LACRL), the question was asked, “How are the faith communities you represent gathering at this time?” Almost, but not all, of the 18 leaders spoke. Of those that did speak, the consensus was that their churches, synagogues, mosques, temples, and centers remain closed, and probably will not re-open until sometime in 2021. Their people are gathering virtually for worship and other events. While several stated that there are a few exceptions under their jurisdiction, the guidance they are giving from their judicatory offices is to “follow the state and local guideline and be safe for the sake of everyone around us.”
