Happy New Year! Happy new decade! It feels…well, just different, don’t you think? A new year and a new decade gives each of us the opportunity to pause, redefine, set goals and look ahead with anticipation and excitement. During the month of January as we prepare for the beginning of the spring semester (and while many of you are in intersession classes), I’d like to take a moment to reflect and look ahead with you at the many possibilities here at Gavilan in the new year.
From a national perspective, it is interesting to me that news about higher education made a striking number of headlines in 2019, in part due to the four year college admissions scandal that exposed the more challenging aspects of college admissions and attracted nationwide attention through the involvement of celebrity parents. But last year brought other changes and controversies to higher ed. National conversations about how to keep struggling small colleges alive have resulted in new state accountability legislation, for many states the

. Many new College Promise programs have been developed across the country, with incentives for students to enroll full time and persist to completion with wrap-around student services. According to a recent article I read, some of the trends in higher education to watch in the coming year include new workforce development initiatives, distance education and lifelong learning, and the impact of the 2020 election. There will be plenty for my future columns as we experience growth at Gavilan, both in our students and in bricks and mortar as we begin our Measure X projects.
2020 will see many continued improvements at Gavilan as we continue to implement our Strategic Plan, our Guided Pathways timeline, our Equity Plan, and seek on-going ways to serve our students through our organizational structure, our Welcome Center, our community outreach, Measure X and more. No matter your connection to the college, you are encouraged to become familiar with these planning documents, available on our website, and to provide feedback through our participatory governance process or by contacting my office.
Get involved in the life of the college and attend one of the great Centennial or President’s Circle events remaining in this academic year, check our website for a detailed calendar. Please also mark your calendars for our 100

Commencement Exercises, scheduled for May 22, 2020 outdoors on the Gilroy campus.
California Community Colleges Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley
will be our keynote speaker, and it promises to be the graduation ceremony of the century! You will hear more about these events and the initiatives implemented at Gavilan during my President’s Forums, in my podcasts and at the High School Forums this spring.
In conclusion, as we begin this year together at Gavilan, here’s my gift for you. Sign up for this weekly newsletter

. This is an editorial project that is a “tonic for tumultuous times.” It tells stories of solutions around the world, initiated by people (just like you) who are curious and interested in applying hope to a needy planet. After all, that is what higher education is all about…and certainly as a student at Gavilan (or a staff, faculty or community member), you understand the importance of being a member of a global community of change. Happy New Year!
