Greetings from Evan
Hi Everyone,

It’s hard to believe it has only been two months since I started my time at Maria’s Bookshop. Already, I feel comfortable in my role and ready to embrace the opportunities and challenges which lie ahead.

One of the things I’ve come to enjoy most about my time at Maria’s has been getting to know the staff and being welcomed so warmly into the Maria’s family. Our staff is truly incredible! Not only are they dedicated and hard-working, but they are some of the most thoughtful, passionate, fun people you will ever meet. Among them, we have writers and mathematicians, runners and gardeners, volunteers and activists, and the list goes on. I am constantly impressed by the diversity of ideas and experiences among our staff members. On top of all that, they are, of course, voracious readers with distinctive personal taste. Since, believe it or not, each staff member can’t quite read every book in the store, we learn from one another about all the great books, authors and new releases we can’t get to ourselves.

In that spirit, our next newsletter will highlight the book someone besides myself has been enjoying lately, as well as a bit about them.

Your friend,
Evan
WHAT'S EVAN READING?
Wanderers
By Chuck Wendig
I just finished exploring Chuck Wendig’s apocalyptic world in his new novel Wanderers . The basic premise of the story is not a unique one: deadly disease spreads quickly across the country, causing panic and violence, while an ever-growing group dubbed “The Wanderers” become possessed by some greater purpose and begin walking across the country, seemingly immune to the disease. But this is more than a classic apocalypse story, it is both a lighthearted and powerful commentary on the divisive fear and contempt harbored in American politics and society today. Wendig’s characters are relatable, his pop-culture references keep things light-hearted, and his narrative style is compelling. On top of all that, part of the story takes place in Ouray!

The Saturday Night Ghost Club
By Craig Davidson
An irresistible and bittersweet coming-of-age story in the vein of  Stranger Things  and  Stand by Me  about a group of misfit kids who spend an unforgettable summer investigating local ghost stories and urban legends

"A celebration of the secret lives of children, both their wonders and their horrors . . . Immensely enjoyable, piercingly clever, and satisfyingly soulful." -Jason Heller,  NPR

Growing up in 1980s Niagara Falls - a seedy but magical, slightly haunted place - Jake Baker spends most of his time with his uncle Calvin, a kind but eccentric enthusiast of occult artifacts and conspiracy theories. The summer Jake turns twelve, he befriends a pair of siblings new to town, and so Calvin decides to initiate them all into the "Saturday Night Ghost Club." But as the summer goes on, what begins as a seemingly light-hearted project may ultimately uncover more than any of its members had imagined...
Escalante's Dream
By David Roberts
In July 1776 a pair of Franciscan friars, Francisco Atanasio Dom nguez and Silvestre V lez de Escalante, were charged by the governor of New Mexico with discovering a route across the unknown Southwest to the new Spanish colony in California. They had other goals as well, some of them secret: converting the indigenous natives along the way to the true faith, discovering a semi-mythical paradise known as Teguay , hunting for sources of gold and silver, and paving the way for Spanish settlements from Santa Fe to Monterey. In strict terms, the expedition failed. Running out of food and beset by an early winter, the twelve-man team gave up in what is now western Utah. The retreat to Santa Fe became an ordeal of survival. The men were reduced to eating their own horses while they searched for a crossing of the raging Colorado River in Glen Canyon. Seven months after setting out, Dom nguez and Escalante staggered back to Santa Fe. Yet in the course of their 1,700-mile voyage, the explorers discovered more land unknown to Europeans than Lewis and Clark would encounter a quarter-century later.
