Dear Parents/Guardians:

I cannot begin to express my gratitude to all of you for a fantastic and productive year! Your faith in our ability to provide a safe space to educate your children meant the world to us. St Mary of the Hills students are so prepared to take on the challenges of this world as they have shown us their strength, perseverance, and bravery as we navigated this pandemic.

In addition, the send off that you gave my staff last Friday was a moment that none of us will ever forget. I cannot thank you all enough for the applause, T-shirts, and the luncheon. Thank you Jenna and Keri Susi for organizing this incredible tribute!

Well done everyone! Enjoy your summer with your amazing children!

God Bless.

SMH--Enter As Boys And Girls To Learn And Exit As Young Men And Young Women To Serve! On June 4, 2021, the graduation ceremony for our eighth graders was held. Charles G gave the Class Presidential Address, Sochi E gave the Salutatorian Address, Aiden T gave the Valedictorian Address, Lilliana L gave the Tribute to Parents, Emma F performed the Graduation Rite, and finally Mrs. Marotta and Father Bennett handed out all of the diplomas. You've crossed the bridge of middle school. Now off to high school you go. Congratulations to the Class of 2021!
SMH--Where students' creativity flows! The fourth graders created beautiful complementary flower panels using oil pastel, sharpies, and a little bit of vegetable oil! They first drew their flowers making sure that they cover each 3 inch panel section. They then outlined with a black sharpie before each piece was cut into three equal strips. Each panel then had to be colored with two complementary colors, those opposite on the color wheel. All centers were brown. Once colored in lightly, they dabbed a Q-Tip into the vegetable oil and smoothed out the oil pastel so that it created a smooth solid color, blending it as you would paint! Their floral panels came out beautifully.
SMH--Where students' creativity flows! Our talented third graders created beautiful bucket paintings of sunflowers based on Vincent Van Gogh’s famous paintings. They drew their vase and flowers before coloring in with oil pastel. Then they painted their background with watercolors to make their flowers sing. And boy do they!
SMH--Where students' creativity flows! The sixth graders created beautiful vases full of flowers with watercolors and wallpaper. First they designed and painted their vases based on the white porcelain and blue Chinese vases using watercolors, then they cut flowers from wallpaper samples to arrange their bouquet. Their watercolor vases are beautifully painted and realistic, and added the flowers, and they are picture perfect!
SMH--Where students' creativity flows! Second graders made Georgia O’Keefe proud with their beautiful larger than life poppies! They drew their flowers, outlined them with oil pastel and then painted them with watercolors. Boy do they pop!
SMH—Where students' creativity flows! Fifth Graders outdid themselves with their beautiful paintings of ducks! They first practiced on realistic drawings then they redrew and painted with watercolor. Not easy, since it is so much about timing and drying of the colors, but they took their time and created masterpieces!
SMH--Connecting Heart And Mind! Students learned how to practice compassion and empathy, identified emotions, and exercised a growth mindset. All grade 3 students earned The Compassion Project certificate. Congratulations, girls and boys, for working hard and completing this project!
Grade 5 is staying cool on this very hot day by playing UNO in the shade during recess!
Grade 5 is excited for Game Day where they can play those games that just take a little bit more time. What a great way to utilize our strategic thinking skills!
Grade 5 used their engineering skills to create Rube Goldberg machines. They were tasked with popping a balloon. Although some did not work on the first try, the students were able to critically think and adjust their designs.
SMH--Experiencing The St. Mary of the Hills School Difference! Mrs. Marotta and Mrs. Powell had an Ice Cream truck come to school because of how hard this past year has been and how amazing the students and teachers handled everything. All of the students enjoyed this special treat! Thank you very much, Mrs. Marotta and Mrs. Powell!!!
SMH--Where Students Learn Real World Skills! All fifth grade students earned a certificate for the Vault digital education program. Students now have a better understanding about money because they learned how to make wise financial decisions and improved their social emotional skills like goal-setting and responsible decision making. The interactive lessons engaged all learners in an immersive adventure that translated financial concepts into easy to apply experiences that helped students develop strategies for managing future finances.
Future Police Officers, Doctors, Nurses, Lawyers, Emergency Medical Technicians, Builders, Teachers, Firemen, Chefs, Judges, start here at St. Mary of the Hills School. Grade One participated in a Community Helpers Presentation on 6/8/21. Each student shared a fact or two about his/her represented subject while dressed up in the chosen career uniform. The students also sang a few songs to add entertainment to the program. The confidence and enjoyment the students exhibited throughout the program was quite heartwarming.
