Dear Cathedral Community,
This week, I had the privilege of attending Clericus, a gathering of local clergy to support one another and strengthen our ministries amidst the challenges we face. We reflected on the conflict and division present in our world, particularly as the upcoming elections approach. Regardless of where we stand politically, many of us are feeling uncertainty, anxiety, and even fear. No matter the outcome, some will feel unheard or dissatisfied.
In moments like these, we can turn to the teachings of Jesus. In Mark 9:30-37, Jesus reminds His disciples that true greatness lies in humility and service, not in power or status. By bringing a child—seen as small and insignificant—before them, He teaches that greatness is found in caring for the most vulnerable. This is our calling as disciples: not to assert dominance, but to serve one another with compassion, especially in times of division.
As a community, we are invited to reflect on how we can live out this spirit of love and humility. How can we, even in our disagreements, show up as people of faith? How can we build bridges rather than walls, and remain committed to loving one another as siblings in Christ? Our calling is to love, listen, and serve, grounded in the grace and peace Christ offers us all.
Looking ahead, I’m pleased to share that Reverend Mary Beth Farrell will expand her role as our Community Chaplain. Mary Beth is a compassionate listener and deeply understands the Cathedral’s resources for connection, healing, and processing anxiety. In addition, Mary Beth will be offering pastoral support to various ministry teams and is committed to being present for community gatherings. She will be an invaluable presence as we journey through these times together. She plans to be at the Cathedral regularly and is available for pastoral conversations and support. In addition, Mary Beth will be offering more opportunities to connect and plans to be at the Cathedral after Wednesday’s Holy Eucharist and an hour before Evensong on Sundays. Rev. Mary Beth is here to listen, offer prayer, and support as we move forward together in faith. You can reach her directly at chaplain@ourcathedral.org.
Please know that my prayers are with each of you. Let’s continue to lean on one another and on the love of God.
With love and deep gratitude,
The Rev. Timothy M. Kingsley
Provost
