From the Rector

Dear People of Ascension,

By now I hope you have heard the news that Mother Murphy-Gill has been called to serve as interim-rector of Saint John’s, Chicago. Mother Murphy-Gill will begin her tenure at Saint John’s on August 1. Mother and I have agreed on July 7 as her last Sunday at Ascension. This will allow her to go on a long-planned family vacation and afford her integral time to transition between calls. Festivities for a proper sending off are underway.

As I reflect on Mother Murphy-Gill’s ministry at Ascension, I can’t express enough my deep gratitude for her sustaining presence during the interim and her collegiality over the past nine months. I hope over the next few weeks you too will thank Mother for her faithful service among us. I'm also grateful for the ministry of our parish clergy who I will rely on to assist us with our liturgical and programmatic schedule. After some thoughtful consideration, I have decided not to begin the process of calling a new curate. This intentional period will allow me to take a step back and evaluate the needs and priorities, beyond the usual responsibilities associated with a traditional cure of souls, in a new curate's portfolio. Further, it will allow me and vestry to examine the long-term financial viability of a full-time curacy.

While we may be "down a priest" please be assured that the holy sacrifice of the mass will be offered, the prayers of the Church Catholic and of this local parish will be said, and whenever you are in crisis or in need, a priest will be there. As I shared during the parish annual meeting, my steadfast priority, above all others, is to be your priest. To love you, to serve with you, to walk with you, and to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

—Fr. de la Torre

March with the Diocese of Chicago in the 2024 Chicago Pride Parade — New Changes and Limitations

The City of Chicago has imposed many changes on the 2024 Chicago Pride Parade, including new restrictions on the number of participants per parade entry. As a result, the Chicago Coalition of Welcoming Churches has limited its partner organizations, including the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago, to bringing only four marchers.

While parishioners will no longer be able to march with the Diocese, St. Peter’s (617 W Belmont Ave) has invited all members of the Diocese to join them in their ministry of welcome and hospitality on the steps of the church. St. Peter’s doors will be open from 9 a.m. until the parade ends, and volunteers will hand out cold water, direct visitors to the parish's accessible bathrooms, and demonstrate the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago’s shared commitment to welcome and inclusion. Parishioners who intended to march in the parade are encouraged to head to St. Peter's after Mass on Sunday, June 30.

Ascension at the Orchestra

Friday, July 12 at 6:30 p.m.

Jay Pritzker Pavilion

After a long hiatus, we are happy to announce a parish outing to the Grant Park Music Festival on Friday, July 12. The evening concert begins at 6:30 p.m. and will feature Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 and Duruflé’s Requiem. Parishioners are encouraged to bring personal lawn chairs — a few picnic blankets will be available. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided by the Rector.

A designated lawn area will be reserved by a member of the parish to ensure we sit together. For those interested in arriving as a group, please promptly meet at Ascension at 5:30 p.m. Whether you plan to get there on your own or wish to travel in a group, please RSVP for our outing by contacting Adam Bronson at adambronson14@gmail.com or 214-738-2131

Consider being a Coffee Hour host

There are spots available for hosting Coffee Hour after either Sunday Mass! Look for the SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER sign-up sheets in Wheeler Hall.

If you are leary of what hosting a Coffee Hour might entail, speak to Hospitality Committee members Josh or Ellie Simpson, David Reeves, LaVerne Saunders or Carol Noren. They will be glad to help.

The Prayers of the People

As part of our Sunday offering of the Mass, we bring to God our petitions and thanksgivings. As a community, we do this by bidding the parish’s intentions in the Prayers of the People. If you wish to have someone added to the Prayers of the People, please email Father de la Torre or Mother Murphy-Gill. You can also fill out the prayer request form in the link below. Names will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, unless otherwise requested.

Lord, hear the prayers of thy people; and what we have asked faithfully, grant that we may obtain effectually, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
