Thomas Wikman's Requiem Mass

Saturday, August 31, 2024 at 1 p.m.

On October 10, 2023, Thomas Wikman, choirmaster of the Church of the Ascension from 1984 to 2014, died at 81. While a decade has passed since Tom’s final Sunday in Ascension’s choir loft, his influence continues to be felt – both in this parish’s historic music program and in the hearts of many musicians and parishioners.

I am heartened to share with you that Tom's Requiem Mass will take place at Ascension on Saturday, August 31 at 1 p.m. Over the last few months, I have worked with Andrea Holliday, Tom’s beloved wife, to finalize these funeral plans. As we grieve Tom’s death and give thanks to God for Tom’s zeal and legacy, my sincere hope is that this Requiem Mass will offer us all comfort and rest.

Ascension at the Orchestra

Friday, July 12 at 6:30 p.m.

Jay Pritzker Pavilion

After a long hiatus, we are happy to announce a parish outing to the Grant Park Music Festival on Friday, July 12. The evening concert begins at 6:30 p.m. and will feature Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 and Duruflé’s Requiem. Parishioners are encouraged to bring personal lawn chairs — a few picnic blankets will be available. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided by the Rector.

A designated lawn area will be reserved by a member of the parish to ensure we sit together. For those interested in arriving as a group, please promptly meet at Ascension at 5:30 p.m. Whether you plan to get there on your own or wish to travel in a group, please RSVP for our outing by contacting Adam Bronson at adambronson14@gmail.com or 214-738-2131

Missing items? Check in the sacristy.

As part of an effort to tidy up the sacristy, acolytes have been organizing and labeling vestments and personal items such as shoes and clothing. Has it been a while since you last saw an item that was stored (or possibly mislaid) in the acolytes' sacristy? We'll be gathering up long-untouched items into a lost-and-found container. We plan to donate or discard unclaimed items in the fall. Please stop by to take a look if you think something you've been missing might have ended up here, and please label any items you'd like us to keep. We have markers, labels, and shoeboxes available for use.

Consider being a Coffee Hour host

There are spots available for hosting Coffee Hour after either Sunday Mass! Look for the SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER sign-up sheets in Wheeler Hall.

If you are leary of what hosting a Coffee Hour might entail, speak to Hospitality Committee members Josh or Ellie Simpson, David Reeves, LaVerne Saunders or Carol Noren. They will be glad to help.

The Prayers of the People

As part of our Sunday offering of the Mass, we bring to God our petitions and thanksgivings. As a community, we do this by bidding the parish’s intentions in the Prayers of the People. If you wish to have someone added to the Prayers of the People, please email Father de la Torre. You can also fill out the prayer request form in the link below. Names will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, unless otherwise requested.

Lord, hear the prayers of thy people; and what we have asked faithfully, grant that we may obtain effectually, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
