From the Rector
This Sunday’s Gospel passage concludes with our Lord going about among the local villages to teach and preach. However, he doesn’t go on this journey in response to an appeal or to follow a great address, but in response to his utter rejection in his hometown of Nazareth and his inability to do any deed of great power. In this story, it's failure that motivates our Lord.
Failure is part and parcel of what it means to be human. It is interwoven to our human story and threads our individual and collective lives. Yet, as people of faith, as followers of a risen and conquering Lord, what defines us is not our failures (or accomplishments), but what we do with our failures (and accomplishments). Our productivity is not gauged by how high we climb, but by how often we fall and get up – by how often we embrace the cycle of dying and rising. Our Lord’s death and resurrection not only offers us a powerful image for this practice, but it’s its very source.
As we journey through the warm summer days of Ordinary Time, I invite you to take inventory of your lives. To see what in your life needs pruning, burying, and resurrection. Because when we stop and let go we create space for God to breathe new life and new possibilities. Then, like our Lord, we can get up and move on to all that God has in store for us.
—Fr. de la Torre

Food Pantry is Saturday, July 6
We will again gather to assemble bags of shelf-stable groceries and personal items for our neighbors in need. We begin filling bags in St. Michael Hall at 9 a.m. and start distributing them at 11 a.m. We need the most help between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., but welcome your help for however long you are able to stay.
Come be the hands, heart, and feet of Christ in our own neighborhood, following in the wake of the Cross, and enjoy some fellowship as well.

Ascension Parishioners March with Pride
at Chicago's 53rd Annual Pride Parade
| |
Walking in the sun and breeze, I saw families of all kinds—young and old, straight, gay, a spectrum of cultural backgrounds, parents with children, and groups of friends uplifted in the shared joy of celebrating our diverse tapestry. Enthusiastic cheers were like waves of love poured over us throughout the parade. I felt joy in offering an affirming wave or high-five to complete strangers. And it struck me that we never know whose life we might impact in a positive way with the momentary embrace hidden in a smile.

James & Ellie from Church of the Ascension and Brock from Church of the Atonement walked representing the Diocese of Chicago |
Marching in the Pride Parade on behalf of Ascension and the Diocese of Chicago was profoundly moving. The sight of so many LGBTQ+ affirming churches united in support is both beautiful and unforgettable. The joyous faces in the crowd, cheering us along the entire parade route, lifted my heart and feet for the journey. As we marched, we distributed pride flags and stickers. I vividly recall one young lady who started crying when I handed her a pride flag and said, “Happy Pride.” This poignant moment embodies the beauty of churches marching in Pride — a step toward healing the wounds inflicted on many wonderful queer individuals by religious communities.

The Prayers of the People
As part of our Sunday offering of the Mass, we bring to God our petitions and thanksgivings. As a community, we do this by bidding the parish’s intentions in the Prayers of the People. If you wish to have someone added to the Prayers of the People, please email Father de la Torre or Mother Murphy-Gill. You can also fill out the prayer request form in the link below. Names will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, unless otherwise requested.
Lord, hear the prayers of thy people; and what we have asked faithfully, grant that we may obtain effectually, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
