From the Rector
Towards the end of the Easter season, our Sunday Gospel readings pull us back in time. No longer do we hear accounts of our Lord’s post-resurrection appearances, but recount our Lord’s farewell discourse (John 14 – 17) given to his disciples immediately after the Last Supper, the night before our Lord’s crucifixion. On Sunday, we’ll hear an excerpt from our Lord’s farewell discourse in which he instructs his disciples:
"If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever."
With our Lord’s imminent glorification in sight, he promises his disciples that his guiding Spirit, the Spirit of truth, will descend upon them. However, our Lord promises that the Father will send another Advocate. Although our Lord is never directly called “Advocate” in the Gospel, he indeed has served and continues to operate in this capacity. For us, the Sacrament of Baptism is the principal act through which all Christians realize our Lord’s promise. In this rite we are marked as Christ’s own forever and receive the Advocate forever.
It is through this Advocate, the Spirit of Truth, that we can follow our Lord’s instruction to love him and keep his commandments. In the end, loving our Lord and keeping his commandments are not ultimatums, but the means through which we and the world are transformed. Loving our Lord and keeping his commandments forces us to embrace the world – its beauty and its brokenness – not as we want, but as God wants us to.

Art and Faith Eastertide Formation Series concludes April 28
Come join us for a 3-week series following the Solemn High Mass where we’ll explore how visual art can deepen our spiritual understanding of what it means to be an Easter people who worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. A light lunch will be provided.
April 28: He Ascended in Heaven
What is the Ascension and its meaning for us? We’ll view paintings—some that you can even visit in person in Chicago—to uncover and understand the Ascension and how it is not simply an event of the past.

The Prayers of the People
As part of our Sunday offering of the Mass, we bring to God our petitions and thanksgivings. As a community, we do this by bidding the parish’s intentions in the Prayers of the People. If you wish to have someone added to the Prayers of the People, please email Father de la Torre or Mother Murphy-Gill. You can also fill out the prayer request form in the link below. Names will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, unless otherwise requested.
Lord, hear the prayers of thy people; and what we have asked faithfully, grant that we may obtain effectually, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
