From the Curate
Some of you know that I’ve been struggling to learn Spanish this past year. My Spanish tutor has heard me complain on multiple occasions, and most recently yesterday, that I am making zero progress. That’s not really true, I have made a lot of progress, but my own anxiety about saying something wrong or mispronouncing a word has become a stumbling block. My ego wants to surpass all the messiness of mistakes and forgo humble progress. Admittedly, I have hoped for something of a Pentecost miracle, where I can suddenly speak and understand another language. But, as I slog through my daily practice and twice monthly tutoring sessions, I’ve learned that to communicate in another tongue is a privilege that must be learned and earned. It is a process that requires fortitude, yes, but also patience and true openness to others’ ways of thinking, feeling, and being in the world—even if the lesson is in the form of reflexive verbs.
At Pentecost, in a swift movement of the Holy Spirit, spoken language is transformed to be no longer barrier but intelligible gift. Rather than a restoration of the single language referred to in Genesis in the story of the Tower of Babel, in this story from Acts, God affirms the diversity of his people, blessing the many parts of his Living Body, the Church.
Even within our parish community, a single freckle on the Body of Christ, there is great opportunity to get to know each other, to hear each other’s stories, to learn how each of us think, feel, and move in the world. This Pentecost and in the season that follows, I hope you take every opportunity to learn from your brothers, sisters, and siblings in Christ. Get to know one another more deeply. Learn each others’ languages. And let your differences be gifts to one another.

The Day of Pentecost & Father Edward Larrabee
The Day of Pentecost marks the 140th anniversary of Father Edward Larrabee's historic tenure as rector of the Church of the Ascension. A pillar of the Anglo-Catholic movement in America, serving in national Catholic devotional societies and as Dean of Nashotah House Seminary, Father Larrabee faithfully served as 10th rector of the Church of the Ascension from 1884-1909.
On Sunday, a timeline highlighting Father Larrabee's ministry at the Church of the Ascension will be on display in Wheeler Hall. Among Father Larrabee's many accomplishments are the completion of the church in 1887 and the commissioning and consecration of the High Altar which continues to stand at the heart of the parish.

Education for Ministry Open House
Interested in deepening your relationship with God? Want to study scripture with other committed people? Looking for an intimate intentional spiritual community? Seeking a better understanding of how to live a faithful life in today’s world?
Education for Ministry is a program of small-group adult formation developed by the
School of Theology at the University of the South, designed to help us prepare for the
ministry we are all called to as Christians. There are EfM groups across the country
that meet weekly to pursue a structured curriculum with an agenda that includes
worship, study, reflection and shared community. A group that will meet nearby at St.
James Cathedral is forming.
If you would like to learn more, you’re warmly invited to attend an Open House of an
existing Education for Ministry group to experience a session on Wednesday, May 15, from 6:00 to 9:00 pm at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 939 Hinman, Evanston. Please contact Laura Jenkins (laura.m.jenkins@icloud.com or 312-282-9664) for more information or to register for this session.

The Prayers of the People
As part of our Sunday offering of the Mass, we bring to God our petitions and thanksgivings. As a community, we do this by bidding the parish’s intentions in the Prayers of the People. If you wish to have someone added to the Prayers of the People, please email Father de la Torre or Mother Murphy-Gill. You can also fill out the prayer request form in the link below. Names will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, unless otherwise requested.
Lord, hear the prayers of thy people; and what we have asked faithfully, grant that we may obtain effectually, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
