“Lord, to whom can we go?” - John 6:68

As a result of our Lord’s discourse and claims, long before the events of Holy Week, Saint John reports that our Lord’s followers began to abandon him. Leaving only the twelve disciples and a few others. Aware of this changing dynamic, our Lord asks the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?” Do you wish to leave? Do you wish to stop following me? To which Saint Peter responds, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”

Saint Peter answers our Lord with a question of his own. A rhetorical question that points to the fact that there is only one source, one person, that they (that we) can turn to in times of need – the one who is the key to eternal life, the Holy One who makes all things holy.

This Sunday at 12:45 pm, following the 11:00 am Solemn High Mass, we’ll kick-off our 2024-2025 Christian Formation program as we reflect on how it is that God, through his Church, makes things holy. Join me and Deacon Poore as we ruminate on the nature and purpose of the Sacraments, the means through which we receive eternal life, come to believe, and see the Holy One of God.

Requiescat in pace

Susanne M. Lenz

Susanne Lenz, wife of Church of the Ascension parishioner Jim Lenz, died last weekend. Funeral arrangements are not known at this time, but will be communicated when we have details. If you wish to send cards of condolence to Jim, his Montgomery Place address is: 5550 S. Shore Drive, Apartment 515, Chicago, IL 60637.

Please join in praying for the repose of Susanne's soul, and also for all who knew and cared for her, and who now grieve her passing.

O God, who by the glorious resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ destroyed death, and brought life and immortality to light: Grant that your servant Susanne, being raised with him, may know the strength of his presence, and rejoice in his eternal glory; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. (BCP, p. 493)

Rest eternal grant unto her, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon her;

May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God,

rest in peace.

Embracing the Sacramental Life

Sunday, August 25 at 12:45 p.m.

We will kick-off our faith formation program by returning "back to basics" as we explore the nature and purpose of the Sacraments; how they shape our lives; and why they matter. We will also discuss the Sacrament of Confirmation and the ritual practice of Reception into The Episcopal Church for those interested in Confirmation and Reception. A hearty lunch will be provided

For further reading, we will be providing free copies of Father Andrew Davison’s book, "Why Sacraments?" – a must-read for those seeking a modern perspective on Anglo-Catholic sacramentality.

One Lord, one Faith, one Baptism:

Consider being a Coffee Hour host

There are spots available for hosting Coffee Hour after either Sunday Mass! Look for the SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER sign-up sheets in Wheeler Hall.

If you are leary of what hosting a Coffee Hour might entail, speak to Hospitality Committee members Josh or Ellie Simpson, David Reeves, LaVerne Saunders or Carol Noren. They will be glad to help.

The Prayers of the People

As part of our Sunday offering of the Mass, we bring to God our petitions and thanksgivings. As a community, we do this by bidding the parish’s intentions in the Prayers of the People. If you wish to have someone added to the Prayers of the People, please email Father de la Torre. You can also fill out the prayer request form in the link below. Names will remain on the prayer list for three weeks, unless otherwise requested.

Lord, hear the prayers of thy people; and what we have asked faithfully, grant that we may obtain effectually, to the glory of thy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
