You may have noticed some changes in our Covid safety measures lately. Beginning this month, lectors, preachers, and the celebrant have all been removing their masks while reading, preaching, announcing, or chanting. That you knew about. But holy water recently returned to the church. And just last week, the social distancing cards were removed from the pews. Some things have stayed the same. For the rest of this month at least, we continue to ask all attending mass to wear and remain in masks while in the church. We continue to register attendees. But coffee hour has returned and one cannot drink coffee or eat delicious snacks through a mask. And so, those who come to coffee hour are those who’ve decided they’re comfortable removing their masks.
And still, the pandemic is not over. Asia is still enduring an Omicron surge and Europe is experiencing another rise in cases. And so we on staff and in leadership continue to monitor infection rates closer to home, stay up to date on the most recent guidelines from expert sources, and meet regularly to discuss and assess what our parish protocols will continue to be and what will change. We acknowledge (and share!) the general sense of excitement over the possibility of moving beyond the emergency phase of the pandemic. Know that we are grateful for your patience as we continue to walk together in this time of tremendous change.
I hope this goes without saying, but if you come down with Covid, or any illness for that matter, and are in need of assistance with meals, errands, groceries, or just a phone call while you quarantine, please reach out to let me or someone else from the church know.

From the Wardens
Rector Search Committee Announced
|
|
Dear Members of Ascension:
At tonight’s (March 17, 2022) Vestry Meeting, the Vestry and Wardens voted on the selection of the members of a Rector Search Committee. The Search Committee will begin the process of seeking the new Eighteenth Rector to lead the parish following the retirement of the Seventeenth Rector, the Very Reverend Patrick Raymond. The committee consists of two chairpersons, four members of the Vestry and four parish members at large. Members of the committee are as follows:
Co-Chairpersons:
Cynthia Perrizo
David Schrader
Committee Members:
Jim Lo Bello
Lawrence Cox
Marlea Edinger
Patrick Johnston
David Reeves
Joshua Simpson
Dan Stell
Enrique Vilaseco
Diocesan Advisors:
Father Kevin Caruso, Trinity Episcopal Church, Wheaton
Mother Andrea Mysen, Diocesan Director of Ministries
An opportunity to serve on the committee was posted in our newsletter and announced during services over a three week period. We received a number of requests from persons who wished to serve on the committee or wanted to nominate another person for the committee. The Wardens and Chairpersons together selected a group we have faith will represent both Ascension’s past and present and will work together as we embark into the future together in our search for our next Rector. Please pray for this committee and for our parish as we begin this search process.
Faithfully,
Kenneth Kelling, Senior Warden
LaVerne Saunders, Junior Warden

UKRAINE CRISIS RESPONSE
Many of us are feeling helpless as to how to respond to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. One way to help Ukrainian families is by giving financially to Episcopal Relief and Development. Your donation will help provide cash, blankets, hygiene supplies and other needed assistance to families fleeing from violence in Ukraine.
And finally, pray. Pray hard for peace in Ukraine. For peace in all places of conflict and violence. And for peace in our own hearts.
Almighty God, kindle, we beseech thee, in every heart the true love of peace,
and guide with thy wisdom those who take counsel for the nations of the earth,
that in tranquillity thy dominion may increase till the earth is filled with the knowledge of thy love; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Come Make Bagged Lunches Every other Tuesday
A small group of parishioners has been gathering every Tuesday evening to prepare bagged lunches for Chicago Help Initiative, a nonprofit organization that delivers and serves meals to Chicago’s unhoused population. The group will meet again, March 29 at 7 p.m. We currently need assistance with preparing the approximately 50 lunches as well as delivering them to First St. Paul’s Lutheran (just a few blocks of Ascension on LaSalle) between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday mornings. Please contact Bonnie Scott for more information.
This ministry is in its early days, and the sustainability of it is unclear unless there is more participation. If the monthly food pantry on Saturdays has been difficult for you to attend, please consider this feeding ministry as an alternative.

We Need Your Help
Holy Week is just a couple of weeks away, and we need your help! Please consider how you might support both our regular and Holy Week services in April. We'll need acolytes, ushers, techs, and hospitality hosts. Just as importantly, we'll need to get together to plan and set up flowers and plants for Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Easter Vigil. We're also looking for people to work together on setting up and putting away the Altar of Repose -- many hands make light work. Do get in touch with me or other parish leaders if you can help or would like to find out more. And look for additional information in coming weeks.

Faith Formation and Prayer Opportunities in Lent
|
|
Mondays - Lenten Lunches at Noon via Zoom
Every Monday during Lent, we’ve been discussing the book Holy Solitude, which provides a reflection each day on how to recognize the presence of God in our lives through small acts of solitude. We no longer have copies of this book at the church, but they are available on Amazon or IndieBound. If you are experiencing financial hardship and unable to purchase a copy, please contact the church.
