Probiotics or Prebiotics
By now you've probably heard or read of the trillions of bacteria that populate in our gut. There are more of them then we have human cells in our body. Yet,
they play a very important role in keeping us healthy. They decide what is absorbed from our intake of food which keeps us from becoming fat, keeps
inflammation at low levels, and even strengthens our immune system.
Probiotics
are the supplements that contain some of these bacteria. By taking them, we hope to increase the good bacteria over the bad bacteria in our
gut
resulting in enhanced health. Still, it is presumptuous of us to assume that we can influence all those trillions of bacteria by swallowing supplements
containing only a few billion of those bacteria.
Prebiotics are the foods that feed these bacteria. A better approach is to feed those good bacteria the foods that they like and prefer which will result in
more of those good bacteria enhancing our health. Those preferred foods are fiber containing. These are raw vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and grains.
Most people do not even eat as many fresh fruits and vegetables as is recommended. In terms of health benefits, eating fewer than five servings
of fruits
and vegetables a day does very little good. The health benefits start at five servings and increase in benefits up to ten servings a day.
Sadly, most of us eat only 5 percent of our food as raw fruits and vegetables, when we really to eat 75 percent of them as raw. The tomato or lettuce on
a cheeseburger is all of the raw food most of us consume in an entire day. What's worse, ketchup is the only "vegetable" some individuals eat in an
entire day. Some people go for days on end without any raw, living food and very few cooked vegetables.
