Dear LSU Family,

I hope you and your extended family members have fared the recent storms well. As the nation watched Hurricane Harvey barrel into Texas on the 12th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, I know many of us felt a sense of the worst kind of deja vu. I am proud to tell you, though, that just like during last year's flood, our Tigers rallied, coming to the aid of those in need in great number. They raised funds, collected goods, and even traveled to affected areas to help families begin the long road to recovery.

I think what is most inspirational about their efforts is that they did not simply bring tools and talent. They brought hope, something we all know is in short supply after a natural disaster of this magnitude.

We stand prepared to do the same for our neighbors in Florida who are bracing for the impact of Hurricane Irma, as well.

What makes LSU the best place in the world for students to attend is that we don't just train through books and lectures -- we create leaders in the classroom and in the community. We build good global citizens capable of changing the world around them. And most of all, we instill a sense of giving back to those in need.

If you are interested in supporting our Texas Tigers or the Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, visit www.lsu.edu/floodrelief.

Sincerely,

F. King Alexander

LSU President

New Semester, New Mike VII

While the first day of the fall semester is always an exciting time, Aug. 21, 2017 delivered more than the average kickoff for LSU students. The day started with the much-anticipated release of the university's newest tiger mascot into his massive habitat, officially making the Bengal-Siberian mix Mike VII.

LSU Hosts Eclipse Extravaganza

The announcement of Mike VII wasn't the only historic event taking place on Aug. 21. North America experienced a partial solar eclipse that day, and LSU had the full breadth and depth of its astronomical expertise on display for the benefit of our student body. Complete with expert commentary from our faculty, students were able to witness the rare event safely while learning more about the scientific opportunities LSU has to offer.

#1 Value in Louisiana Higher Education
Recently released rankings put LSU as best in Louisiana and a leader in the SEC in one of the most important outcomes to today's students: return on investment.

According to PayScale's 2017-18 College Salary Report, LSU alumni have  the highest starting salaries of any public in-state university, as well as the third-highest in the SEC, behind only Texas A&M and Florida. Nationally, our graduates also fare well, ranking in the top half of public flagship universities.

Washington Monthly's rankings and Kiplinger's Personal Finance also support these findings, proving that LSU's exceptional academic offerings provide real results upon graduation.

LSU Welcomes a Very Special Tiger - Kayne Finley
LSU Freshman Kayne Finley has dreamed of attending LSU since he was a very small child, and he wasn't about to let a cancer diagnosis stop him. Early last year, Kayne was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a cancer of the brain stem, and doctors said his tumor was inoperable.

"It's just really nice to know that the community at LSU specifically is very open, very nice. All the staff, I love them," Kayne said.
