In Loving Memory of Private Marc D. Christian

End of Watch: January 2019

The District of Columbia Department of Corrections mourns the loss of Private Marc D. Christian. We will always cherish Pvt. Christian's outstanding service to our agency. Heartfelt thoughts and prayers are extended to his family, friends, fellow Correctional Officers, and colleagues during this time.

Welcome B.C.T. Class 19-01

On Friday, January 18, 2019, 17 Correctional Officers were sworn into the District of Columbia Department of Corrections. The ceremony that was led by Amy Lopez, Deputy Director for College and Career Readiness, took place at DOC's Center for Professional Development and Learning. Special remarks were given by Director Quincy L. Booth and Dr. Bahiyyah M. Muhammad, Professor of Criminology at Howard University. The Oath of Office and Pinning of the Badges was administered by Warden Lennard Johnson, and special award presentations were made by Cortney Savage and Nicole Wallace, Class 19-01's Advisors and Training Specialists.

“The class of 19-01 has the heart to achieve whatever we put our minds to," Officer Amanda Copeland said.

"The right words spoken at the right time can change the course of history. Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much."

Special acknowledgments to B.C.T. 19-01's Class Advisors and all Center for Professional Development and Learning staff for their outstanding work training our recruits.

R.S.A.T. Training

On Tuesday, January 8, 2019, the District of Columbia Department of Corrections held its first Residential Substance Abuse and Treatment (RSAT) training under the leadership of Camile Williams, Deputy Director for Programs & Case Management. The training was conducted at DOC's Center for Professional Development and Learning.

Jacqueline Williams, Program Administrator, and her team organized the two day training; which covered topics such as RSAT Policy , What an RSAT Client Looks Like , Treatment vs. Punishment , Co-Occurring Disorders , and Taking Care of the Care Taker.

Training participants consisted of dedicated Correctional Officers who desire to work in the Specialized Program Unit.

"This training was right on time as it relates to the loss of one of our very own," Private Winston said.

Training participants also reinforced that the work that the Programs & Case Management team does is truly making a difference.

"I learned a lot from this training," Private Staley said.

Policies & Procedures

Policy binders with the agency’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) were placed in the Officers' Dining Rooms (ODR) at the Central Detention Facility, Correctional Treatment Facility, Central Cell Block and the Training Academy.

Once existing and new policies are approved by the Director, the OPP will update the binders monthly. All binders must remain in their respective places.

PP 5500.2 – Restrictive Housing

PM 5300.1 – Inmate Disciplinary and Administrative Housing Hearings

PP 3810.1 – ADA Accommodating Employees with Disabilities

New Beginnings!

Reverend Nicole Colbert

Rev. Nicole Colbert joins DOC as the new Supervisory Chaplain. While serving in the Prince George's County Public Schools system as a General & Special Educator for 20 years, Rev. Colbert worked as a Speech Language Pathologist. During this time, she became licensed and ordained by the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church, receiving a Master's of Divinity from Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of Theology, and she is a Board Certified Chaplain.

Rev. Colbert joins us from the North Virginia Mental Health Institute where she served as the Director of Chaplaincy Services. She loves ministry, dancing, and is beyond excited to serve the inmate population and staff.

Keith Thompson

Keith Thompson is a native of Washington, DC and he's a proud graduate of Woodrow Wilson Senior High School. At Woodrow Wilson SHS, Mr. Thompson realized he wanted to make a difference through communication. He began to study an Alternative to Violence and became certified in peer mediation and conflict resolution.

He received a Bachelor's of Arts in Mass Communications from Virginia State University. He brings over five years of experience from the operations side of the District of Columbia Department of Corrections.

Mr. Thompson is truly passionate about working at DOC and looks forward to making a positive and lasting impact on the lives of the individuals in our care and returning citizens in the communities we serve.
