Welcome B.C.T. Class 17-01
On September 11, 2017, the Basic Correctional Training Class 17-01 graduated on the campus of Gallaudet University. The ceremony, led by Harry Lundy, Training Specialist, featured the presentation of colors by the DOC Honor Guard, the National Anthem sung by Lurendy Armstrong and remarks from Director Quincy L. Booth, Warden Lennard Johnson, Training Administrator, Raul Gradillas, and Alexus Jones, Class President.

“The journey of the Training Academy has officially ended for us and the start of a new journey begins,” Ms. Jones said. “Although we don’t know what to expect, we are thoroughly prepared for it. We must continue to look sharp, feel sharp and think sharp.”

Graduates were presented with certificates before the Oath of Office and the Pinning of the Badges was administered by Warden Johnson. Five students earned academic achievement awards.

“It’s a profession that is often times an afterthought, but it’s a profession that requires a lot of care, a lot of dedication and lot of pride,” Warden Lennard Johnson said.

Special acknowledgements are extended to our Training Academy staff for their unique expertise and work with our graduates. Congratulations to Class 17-01 and welcome to the DOC Family!

Empowerment Sessions

DOC launched Empowerment Sessions which allows elected officials, returning citizens and community leaders to come inside our facilities to share their professional and personal experiences with inmates. The program was also established to foster dialogue amongst inmates about the needs and perspectives which ultimately can potentially create laws, community programming and funding. Discussion topics have ranged from social, economic and prison reform, entrepreneurship, family, lifestyles, and re-entry.

Our growing list of speakers includes Deputy Mayor for Greater Economic Opportunity, Courtney Snowden, Council Member Charles Allen (Ward 6), Robert White, Council Member At-Large, Lorenzo Stewart, (Vision of Winning Transportation), Council Member Kenyan McDuffie (Ward 5), Shae Harris, (MORCA), Sherman Justice, (DOES), author Lamont Carey, Director Odie Donald II, Director of the D.C. Department of Employment Services, and the Honorable Judge Emmet G. Sullivan.

We look forward to continuing this series throughout the fall!

Special Olympics DC Law Enforcement Torch Run
On Friday, October 6, 2017, DOC participated in the 32nd Annual Special Olympics DC Law Enforcement Torch Run to raise funds to support Special Olympics athletes in the District of Columbia. Over $40,000 was raised due to collective fundraising efforts of local and federal law enforcement agencies.

Cheers to Deputy Warden, Charles Cave, Capucine Carrington, Harriette Chester, Denton Cuthbert, Winifred Hawkins, Renee Morgan, Valerie Richards,
Elbonny Vactor, and Jami Williams for taking the 3.1 mile trek from Marshall Plaza in Northwest to Ft. McNair in Southwest, DC. You all finished the race despite the steamy weather! Special acknowledgements are extended to our general donors Chasity Jones, Michael Phetphongsy and Sallie Thomas. We are excited about continuing our support of this cause and hope to increase Team DOC's presence at next year's race!
