First Honda Clarity Fuel Cell FCVs Arrive in Europe
On November 29, Honda announced that the first Clarity Fuel Cells, Honda's next generation fuel cell vehicle (FCV), arrived in Europe. The FCVs, being delivered initially to London and Copenhagen customers, will take part in the Hydrogen for Innovative Vehicles (HyFIVE) European Union (EU) demonstration project to highlight the capabilities of FCVs and increase awareness and adoption of the technology.

The Clarity Fuel Cell seats five occupants, with an EPA-rated range of 366 miles on a full tank of hydrogen.
The HyFIVE project aims to promote the awareness and adoption of FCV technology and infrastructure across Europe. Once deployment is completed, 185 FCVs from five automotive manufacturers will be with private and corporate customers across Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Sweden and UK.

FuelCell Energy Announces Acquisition of Fuel Cell Project at Central Connecticut State University
On December 13, FuelCell Energy announced the acquisition of a megawatt (MW)-scale fuel cell power plant already in operation, which generates power and steam for Central Connecticut State University in Connecticut.

The 1.4 MW plant generates in excess of 11 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually, and has been in operation for approximately five years. By acquiring the plant, FuelCell Energy captures recurring and predicable electricity sales.

Bloom Energy Completes Fuel Cell Project at Morgan Stanley Global Headquarters in New York City
On December 13, Bloom Energy and Morgan Stanley announced the completion of a 750 kilowatt (kW) fuel cell system at Morgan Stanley's global headquarters in the Times Square neighborhood of New York City. Executives from Bloom Energy, Morgan Stanley, Con Edison, and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) attended an event commemorating the project completion.

The solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) will provide 6 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity to the building each year. The fuel cell project is supported by NYSERDA through a long-term renewable energy credit contract awarded under the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) Main Tier Program to develop renewable energy projects in the state.

Nissan Showcases E-Bio Fuel Cell Vehicle to Brazilian President at Renova Bio 2030
On December 15, Nissan presented its "e-Bio Fuel Cell" concept fuel cell vehicle (FCV) to Brazilian President Michel Temer at the Renova Bio 2030 event in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

The FCV concept is powered by a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system, and is fueled by a bioethanol mixture. The e-Bio Fuel Cell is cable of ranges of over 600 kilometers (km), and Nissan plans to conduct road tests of the vehicle on streets in Brazil.

ITM Power Supplying 0.5 MW Electrolyzer as Part of HyDeploy Consortium Power-to-Gas Project in UK
On November 30, ITM Power announced it would supply a 0.5 megawatt (MW) electrolyzer system, as part of the HyDeploy Consortium, to demonstrate the use of blended hydrogen in the United Kingdom (UK) gas grid.
The three year, £7 million ($8.8 million) project, funded by Ofgem, the UK's gas regulatory body, and the National Grid, a gas distribution company, will provide a system for hydrogen gas injection into the natural gas grid, enabling the power-to-gas market in the UK.

Toyota Reveals Mobile Hydrogen Refueler, Joins Mirai Trio in Australia
On November 25, Toyota Australia unveiled a mobile hydrogen refueler, comprised of Linde's hydrogen fueling technology mounted on the bed of a moving truck.

The mobile hydrogen refueler will accompany three Toyota Mirai fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) as they tour around Australia, showcasing the technology.

McPhy Energy and French Organizations Join Forces to Develop Hydrogen Distribution Infrastructure for the Rouen Metropolitan Region
On November 29, McPhy Energy announced it had joined forces with Métropole Rouen Normandie of France and GNVERT, a mobility solutions company, to deploy hydrogen infrastructure in the region, including a hydrogen fueling station, multiple fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) and a battery electric vehicle (BEV) with fuel cell range-extender.
The hydrogen fueling facility was designed by McPhy energy, and will allow 350 bar fueling of a fleet of up to 50 FCVs.

Doosan to Supply Fuel Cell System to Implats Platinum Refinery in South Africa
On December 7, Implats Platinum Refinery announced it would install an 8 megawatt (MW) fuel cell system from Doosan Fuel Cells America to power its platinum refinery in Springs, outside of Johannesburg, South Africa.
The fuel cell system will be fueled by natural gas from the local grid, and is expected to be online in early 2018. The project was financed under a 20 year power purchase agreement (PPA) by Impala Refining services.

UCI Injects Renewable Hydrogen into Campus Power Supply with Support of Proton OnSite
On December 6, University of California, Irvine announced engineers had successfully implemented the first power-to-gas hydrogen project in the United States, converting excess renewable energy into hydrogen gas.

The pilot program began last year with funding from utility Southern California Gas Co. and participation by Proton OnSite, which provided the electrolyzer that produces hydrogen from electricity and water. UC Irvine reports that faculty and students will continue to monitor the project and use it to conduct research.

ITM Power to Showcase 100 MW Electrolyzer Plant Designs at Hannover Messe
On December 12, ITM Power announced that it will showcase a series of large-scale electrolyzer configurations up to 100 megawatts (MW) in size at the Hannover Messe 2017 trade show in Hannover, Germany. The configurations are in response to oil and gas industry demands for larger-scale electrolyzer applications such as power-to-gas, refineries, and steel making.

ITM Power's modular electrolyzer system is based on proton-exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack technology. ITM Power will showcase a new 2.2 MW design that form the basis of the 10, 30, 60, and 100 MW designs.

Air Liquide Wins the "Mobility of the Future" Award from Europe 1 Radio for Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Development
On December 12, Air Liquide was awarded the 'Mobility of the Future' award by Europe 1 Radio at an event held in Paris, France.
Air Liquide was awarded because of its initiatives to promote fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) in Europe, and accelerate the deployment of hydrogen fueling infrastructure.

ITM Power Joins EU Initiative to Drive Power-to-Gas Energy Storage
On December 1, ITM Power announced it will participate in a new package of directives from the European Commission, titled "Clean Energy for All Europeans - unlocking Europe's growth potential.
The directives focus on enabling power-to-gas markets, energy storage, and hydrogen fuel produced renewably through electrolysis.

FCH-JU Working to Enable Market Entry of Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Technologies
On November 29, the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen - Joint Undertaking (FCH-JU) provided an update on the FCH-JU Stakeholder Forum, which took place on November 23 in Brussels, Belgium.

On December 4, Hydrogen London announced that Shirley Rodrigues, Deputy Mayor for the Environment and Energy, will take over as Chair of Hydrogen London.

Fuel Cell Bus Project CHIC launches Final Project Report as Tool for Cities and Bus Operators
On November 30, the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen-Joint Undertaking (FCH-JU) project Clean Hydrogen in European Cities (CHIC) released a final project report titled "fuel cell electric buses: a proven zero emission solution. Key facts, results, recommendations" at the International Zero Emission Bus Conference in London.
The report is intended to guide cities and bus operators on how to deploy fuel cell buses (FCBs) to, including environmental reports and commercial strategies for successful introduction of FCBs.

Germany to Invest $265 Million in Fuel Cell Vehicles
On December 14, Germany's Transport Ministry announced a €250 million ($265 million) investment by 2019 in fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). The investment will aim to make FCVs more suitable for mass-production by accelerating research and development and development hydrogen fueling infrastructure.

ARPA-E Announces $70 Million in Project Funding Including REFUEL Hydrogen Fuel Projects
On December 15, the Advanced Research Projects - Energy (ARPA-E) announced $70 million in project funding, including funding for Renewable Energy to Fuels Through Utilization of Energy-Dense Liquids (REFUEL) to create hydrogen fuel and electricity.
Projects in the REFUEL program will develop scalable technologies for converting water, nitrogen and carbon dioxide into energy-dense carbon-neutral liquid fuels and back into electricity or hydrogen fuel on demand.
A
wardees include FuelCell Energy, who will build a reversible electrochemical cell to produce ammonia from nitrogen and water or consume ammonia to generate electricity. For a full list of REFUEL awards, click here.

DOE Fuel Cell Bus Analysis Finds Fuel Economy to be 1.4 Times Higher than Diesel
On November 30 at the Zero Emissions Bus Workshop in London, Department of Energy's Deputy Assistant Secretary for Transportation Reuben Sarkar announced a new Fuel Cell Technologies Office (FCTO) report regarding fuel cell buses (FCBs).
The report shows that the average fuel economy of FCBs from three fleets is ~6 miles per diesel gallon equivalent (DGE), 1.4 times higher than conventional diesel buses (~4.2 miles per DGE) from one fleet and up to 1.9 times higher than compressed natural gas buses (~3.3 miles per DGE) in another fleet.
Evaluations for the report were provided by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

RFI issued for long-endurance Group 2 UAS for US Marine Corps
On December 14, The US Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) issued a request for information (RFI) for a new long-endurance Group 2 unmanned aircraft system (UAS) for use by the US Marine Corps (USMC), including those powered by fuel cells.
RFI responses are due by December 28, 2016.

California Energy Commission Announces Grant Funding for Sustainable Freight Transportation Projects
On November 29, the California Energy Commission (CEC) released a Grant Funding Opportunity for 'Sustainable Freight Transportation Projects' under the Alternative and Renewable Fuel and Vehicle Technology Program (ARFVTP).
The CEC is making available a total of $27 million in grant funding for projects that demonstrate medium and heavy-duty advanced vehicle transportation technologies at seaports, including fuel cells.
The application deadline is January 26, 2017.
