Toyota Unveils New Heavy-Duty Hydrogen Fuel Cell Truck at Port of Los Angeles
|
On April 22, FCHEA member Toyota unveiled the first of its new hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty trucks jointly developed with Kenworth at the Port of Los Angeles. According to Toyota, the new truck has an estimated range of more than 300 miles per hydrogen fill, twice that of a typical drayage trucks' average daily duty cycle. Toyota and Kenworth will deploy a total of 10 fuel cell trucks as part of the Zero-and-Near-Zero Emission Freight Facilities Project (ZANZEFF), hauling cargo received at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach throughout the LA Basin.
The new fuel cell truck expands on Toyota's Project Portal proof of concept trucks, which according to the company have logged more than 14,000 miles of testing and real-world drayage operations around the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. Toyota states that the first fuel cell truck under the ZANZEFF project will begin drayage operations in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Further phases of the ZANZEFF project will include the construction of two new hydrogen stations with heavy duty refueling capacity around the ports developed by Shell, and the expanded use of zero-emissions material handling equipment at Toyota's port operations. Four of the trucks will be operated by Toyota Logistics Services, three by United Parcel Services, two by Total Transportation Services Inc., and one by Southern Counties Express.

FedEx Receives Fuel Cell-Powered Ground Support Equipment from Plug Power at Albany Airport
|
On April 22, FCHEA member Plug Power announced the delivery of fuel cell-powered electric cargo tuggers for use by FedEx at the Albany International Airport in Albany, New York. The ground support vehicles were built by Charlatte America and operate using Plug Power’s zero emission ProGen hydrogen engines.
According to Plug Power, the addition of the company's hydrogen fuel cell technology enables the cargo tuggers to tow up to 40,000 pounds without stopping for up to four hours and only requires three to four minutes for refueling. Plug Power also states that the vehicles also operate with a high energy efficiency of around 45% , while reducing maintenance demands through lower wear and tear.
The ground support vehicles will refuel at Plug Power's hydrogen fueling station at its Latham, New York headquarters. Plug Power notes that the U.S. Department of Energy's Fuel Cell Technologies Office collaborated with the companies involved on this project.

Agilent Installs 3.5 Megawatts of Bloom Energy Fuel Cell Servers
|
On April 23, FCHEA member Bloom Energy announced that it has installed 3.5 megawatts of fuel cell servers for Agilent Technologies, a global leader in life sciences, diagnostics, and applied chemical markets. The fuel cells were deployed at Agilent's corporate headquarters in Santa Clarita, California, and a business unit in Little Falls, Delaware.
According to Bloom, the fuel cell servers will offset about 1,200 metric tons of CO2 annually at Agilent’s headquarters and more than 3,500 metrics tons of CO2 at its Delaware facility.

Hyundai NEXO Fuel Cell Sells More than 1,000 Units Worldwide so Far in 2019
|
On May 19, FCHEA member Hyundai announced that it has sold a total of 1,075 NEXO fuel cell vehicles (FCV) since the beginning of 2019, as reported on South Korea's
Chosunilbo news site. According to Hyundai, 767 of the NEXOs were sold in South Korea and 308 overseas.
NEXO was first launched in April of 2018 and was introduced into overseas markets throughout the year, with 949 NEXOs sold worldwide by the end of 2018. This year is the first time Hyundai has sold more than 1,000 FCVs since it started commercially manufacturing its Hyundai Tucson FCV in 2013.

FuelCell Energy to Construct 1.4 Megawatt Power Plant for San Bernadino Municipal Water Department
|
On April 30, FCHEA member FuelCell Energy announced that it will construct a 1.4 megawatt fuel cell power plant for the City of San Bernadino Municipal Water Department (SBMWD) in California. The SureSource 1500 fuel cell system will operate on anaerobic digester gas and as needed, natural gas, to produce electricity and thermal energy to support the operation of the SBMWD water reclamation plant.
According to FuelCell Energy, SBMWD will purchase the electricity produced through a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

Nel Launches Large-Scale Containerized PEM Electrolyzer
|
On May 7, FCHEA member Nel ASA announced the commercial launch of its hydrogen-producing M Series Proton PEM electrolyzer in a containerized version. The new M Series electrolyzer will be delivered as standard 1 and 2 megawatt (MW) configurations.
Nel states that scaling up from the 1 MW platform to the 2 MW platform and allowing multiple units to be integrated easily in the field was a key consideration during the development.

California's 40th Hydrogen Fueling Station Opens in Sacramento
|
On May 22, the California Fuel Cell Partnership (CaFCP), an FCHEA member, announced that the state's 40th retail hydrogen station is now open in the state capital of Sacramento. The station was developed by Shell, will operate twenty-four hours per day, and is the third hydrogen fueling facility to open in the greater Sacramento area.
The Sacramento station is one of the first to have two fueling nozzles at full-pressure H70. CaFCP says this reflects the ongoing evolution of hydrogen stations across California and the growing number of fuel cell vehicles in the state, which now totals more than 6,500.

Doosan to Deliver Fuel Cell System for Connecticut City's Wastewater Control Facility
|
On May 16,
The Bristol Observer reported that FCHEA member Doosan Fuel Cell America signed a contract in April to install a fuel cell system for the City of Bristol, Connecticut, Wastewater Pollution Control (WPC) facility.
The new fuel cell is expected to be operational by late fall of 2019, and according to Sean Hennessey, division director at the WPC plant, the cost benefit over the term of the contract is anticipated to be nearly $901,000, with initial savings beginning within the year. Hennessey also stated that the power supplied by the Doosan fuel cell system will be sufficient to effectively cover the full operation of the WPC facility.

FuelCell Energy Acquires Ownership of 15 Megawatt Fuel Cell Park in Connecticut
|
On May 13, FuelCell Energy announced the acquisition of a 14.9 megawatt (MW) fuel cell park in Bridgeport, Connecticut with Dominion Energy. FuelCell Energy developed, constructed and commissioned the Bridgeport fuel cell park in December of 2013. Since its commissioning, FuelCell Energy has operated and maintained the plant under a service agreement with Dominion Energy.
Under the terms of the agreement, FuelCell Energy acquired 100% of the equity interest in Dominion Bridgeport Fuel Cell, LLC, from Dominion Generation, Inc., the original owner of the project. According to FuelCell Energy, the new acquisition will add revenue in excess of $15 million per year.

PDC Machines Receives Export Award from U.S. Commerce Department
|
On May 23, FCHEA member PDC Machines received the President's "E" Award for Exports from United States Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross.
The President’s “E” Award was created in 1961 by Executive Order of the President and is the highest recognition a U.S. entity can receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports. This year, 26 companies were honored with the “E” Award for Exports for demonstrating a sustained increase in export sales over a four-year period.

Hyundai's U.S. Fuel Cell Vehicle Market Accumulates More than 7.5 Million Miles of Emissions-Free Driving
|
On April 22, as part of its Earth Day celebrations, Hyundai announced that its U.S. fuel cell vehicle (FCV) market has accumulated more than 7.5 million miles of driving. Hyundai notes that this is equal to circumnavigating the Earth's circumference 300 times.
Hyundai's FCV sales in the United States include the Tucson SUV, introduced in 2015, and the NEXO SUV, introduced at the beginning of this year.

California Fuel Cell Partnership Celebrates Twenty-Year Anniversary
|
On April 22, the California Fuel Cell Partnership (CaFCP) celebrated its twenty-year anniversary. CaFCP originally launched on April 22, 1999, when stakeholders representing automakers, government, and private came together with the goal of furthering development of fuel cell vehicle technology and hydrogen fueling infrastructure.
To celebrate its anniversary, CaFCP has put together a YouTube video that captures a few of the milestones in the Partnership's history and California’s efforts to bring zero-emission vehicles to the road. The video can be accessed by clicking the thumbnail below.

Hyundai to Develop a Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Powered Ship
|
On May 9, Hyundai Motor signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with South Korea's Gangwon Province to apply hydrogen fuel cell systems to small 5-ton fishing boats.
Business Korea reports that the agreement was signed at the International Hydrogen Forum 2019, held at the Alpensia Convention Center in Gangwon Province.
According to
Business Korea, under the MOU, Hyundai will develop a stack module for ocean-going ships by the end of 2022, improve the performance of its fuel cell systems by 2025 and apply the technology to real ships after 2030.

Frankfurt Orders World's Largest Fuel Cell Train Fleet Powered by Hydrogenics
|
On May 21, French train manufacturer Alstom announced that RMV, the public transport network for the Frankfurt metropolitan area, in Hesse, Germany, has ordered twenty-seven of its Coradia iLint hydrogen fuel cell passenger trains for delivery by December 2022, which will be powered by FCHEA member Hydrogenics' fuel cells. The Coradia iLint fleet will replace diesel-powered trains on four routes in the Main-Taunus district of Hesse.
In addition to the trains, the order also includes the supply of hydrogen fuel, maintenance, and the provision of reserve capacities for the next twenty-five years. The train fleet will refuel at a hydrogen station at the Industriepark Höchst in Frankfurt's Höchst district. According to Alstom, the contract from RMV is valued at €500 million (~$559 million) and funding support for the order will be provided by Germany's Federal Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

The Coradia iLint is the world's first hydrogen fuel cell passenger train, and two of the trains have been in passenger service in the Germany State of Lower Saxony since September 2018. When the RMV order is delivered, it will be the world's largest fleet of hydrogen fuel cell passenger trains. Additional orders of the Coradia iLint have been placed in Lower Saxony, with plans to roll out the trains across Germany and France in the coming years.

Nel Receives Purchase Order for 4.5 Megawatt Electrolysis Installation at Swedish Steelmaking Joint Venture
|
On April 25, Nel Hydrogen announced a purchase order for a 4.5 megawatt alkaline electrolyzer solution from Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology (HYBRIT) Development AB, a Swedish jount venture owned by SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall. HYBRIT's goal is to develop the world’s first fossil free ore-based steelmaking technology by replacing coal with hydrogen fuel.
The electrolysis system will be used to produce hydrogen for a steel production pilot plant, which will operate in Luleå, Sweden, from 2021 – 2024. This will be followed by a demonstration phase, with target of full-scale implementation by 2035, according to Nel.

Air Liquide Announces Joint Venture to Develop Hydrogen Distribution Infrastructure in China
|
On April 25, FCHEA member Air Liquide and Chengdu Huaqi Houpu Holding co., Ltd (Houpu), finalized the creation of a joint venture for the development, production, distribution of hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles. The joint venture, known as Air Liquide Houpu Hydrogen Equipment co., Ltd., will enable the companies to develop projects together that will help develop a network of hydrogen refueling stations in China.

According to Air Liquide, the joint venture is aligned with the Chinese government's 13th five-year plan, which aims to support clean mobility through, in particular, the development and sale of fuel cell vehicles.

Toyota to Partner with Chinese Automaker to Manufacture Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Powered Buses in China
|
On April 22,
The Japan Times reported that Toyota will supply its fuel cell vehicle technology to major Chinese automaker Beijing Automotive Group Co. for integration into the company’s bus line.
The paper reports that production of the buses may increase toward the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Doosan Signs MOU with UAV Manufacturer to Develop Hydrogen Fuel Cell Powered-UAVs
|
On May 20, the
Korea IT Times reported that Doosan Mobility Innovation has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korean drone manufacturer Asoa to develop multi-purpose unmanned aerial vehicles utilizing hydrogen fuel cells.
Through the MOU, both companies plan to jointly develop drones that can be equipped with fuel cell power packs and carry out joint research for early commercialization of this technology.

Hyundai, Kia to Partner with Croatian Automaker to Develop Fuel Cell Vehicle by 2020
|
On May 14, Croatian automaker Rimac Automobili announced that it has entered a strategic partnership with Hyundai Motors and Kia Motors to develop two high-performance electric vehicles, including a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV).
Hyundai will invest €64 million (~$71.5 million) in Rimac, while Kia will invest €16 million (~$17.9 million) for a total investment of €80 million (~$89.4 million). According to Rimac, the automakers will work to develop a high-performance FCV and an electric version of Hyundai Motor’s N brand midship sports car by 2020.

Nel Receives Contracts for Six Hydrogen Fueling Stations in South Korea
|
On May 2, Nel ASA's South Korean subsidiary received two purchase orders from Korea Gas Technology Corporation to install six of its H2Station hydrogen fueling facilities in South Korea. Four stations will be installed in the central Chungbuk Province and two in Pyeongtaek City, just south of Seoul.
According to Nel, the total value of the purchase orders is EUR 8 million (~$8.94 million), and the H2Station units are scheduled to be installed later this year.

Denmark Taxi Company Launches Eight New Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Vehicles
|
On April 30, the Drivr taxi service in Copenhagen, Denmark, added eight Toyota Mirai fuel cell vehicles (FCV) to their fleet. The launch follows the Danish Government’s January 2019 that all taxis in Denmark must be zero-emissions starting in 2025.

reports that Ole Birk Olesen, Denmark's Transportation Minister, attended the launch event for the FCV taxis in Copenhagen and received a ride in one of them.

Financial support for the new FCV taxis comes from the Hydrogen Mobility Europe (H2ME) initiative, which includes the Hydrogen Denmark association and Toyota.

Nel Receives First Hydrogen Station Order in Canada
|
On May 3, Nel Hydrogen announced that it has received a purchase order for one H2Station hydrogen fueling facility to be installed in Vancouver, British Columbia. The order comes from the Hydrogen Technology & Energy Corporation (HTEC) which opened the first retail hydrogen refueling station in Canada last year, also in Vancouver.
HTEC is working with retail fueling companies, with support from automakers and the Canadian government, to install a network of hydrogen stations in British Columbia and Quebec. According to Nel, the Vancouver station will be installed in 2020.

Canadian Government Announces Funding for Two Hydrogen Refueling Stations in British Columbia
|
On May 3, Joe Peschisolido, Member of Parliament for Steveston–Richmond East, announced funding for two retail hydrogen refueling stations in the Lower Mainland region of British Columbia, Canada.
The federal Department of Natural Resources (Natural Resources Canada) will provide CAD 2 million (~$1.48 million) to the Hydrogen Technology and Energy Corporation (HTEC) for the two stations. The Government of British Columbia will also contribute CAD 1 million (~$742,000) through its Clean Energy Vehicle Program as part of the province’s CleanBC plan to reduce pollution and meet its climate targets.

Air Liquide, Industry Partners Open Germany's 64th Retail Hydrogen Refueling Station
|
On May 3, Germany's H2 Mobility industry partnership opened the country's 64th retail hydrogen refueling station in Fürth, Bavaria. Air Liquide provided the hydrogen and refueling technology for the station, which is located at an existing Shell service facility.
H2 Mobility plans to open a total of 100 hydrogen stations in Germany by the end of 2019.

Nel to Build Hydrogen Station for Fuel Cell-Powered Buses in London
|
On May 10, Nel ASA announced a contract with Transport for London to provide its H2Station hydrogen refueling solution to London Bus Services Limited. The station, which will be installed in 2020, will service a fleet of 20 hydrogen fuel cell buses at Metroline’s Perivale bus depot in London.
Nel states that the contract has a total value of approximately €2.5 million (~$2.81 million) and includes a 10-year service and maintenance contract. Currently, London has 9,000 buses in operation, and plans to make all buses in London zero-emission by 2037.

Toyota Industries Installs Renewable-Sourced Hydrogen Dispenser for Fuel Cell-Powered Forklifts at Factory
|
On May 23, Toyota Industries installed the 'H2Plaza,' which charges fuel cell forklifts with hydrogen produced onsite from solar-powered electrolysis, at its Takahama Plant in Takahama City, Aichi Prefecture.
According to
Japan Today, the H2Plaza has functions to produce, compress, store and supply hydrogen, and provides fuel to 13 fuel forklifts operating at the factory.

Toshiba Energy Systems & Solutions Corp provided the H2Plaza, which has a production capacity of ten normal cubic meters per hour. Mitsubishi Electric Corp supplied solar panels for the facility, with a total output of 190 kilowatts.

Iceland's Third Hydrogen Refueling Station Opens
|
On May 15, Iceland's third retail hydrogen station for fuel cell vehicles (FCV) opened in Reykjavík, the country's capital. The fueling dispensers were built by Nel Hydrogen and located at an Orkan gas station. Funding support for the station comes from the European Union's Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking (FCH JU) and Hydrogen Mobility Europe program.
The President of Iceland, Guðni Th Jóhannesson, inaugurated the station, together with the Chairman of Reykjavík‘s Council of Environment and Health, Ms. Líf Magneudóttir, the FCH JU Executive Director, Bart Biebuyck, the General Manager of Icelandic New Energy, Mr. Jón Björn Skúlason, and the EU Ambassador to Iceland, Michael Mann.

Toyota Mirai Fuel Cell Vehicle to Launch in Costa Rica Resort Town
|
On May 16, the beach resort town of Las Catalinas, Costa Rica, announced that will deploy the Toyota Mirai fuel cell vehicle for guests and residents to use in a car-sharing service. The hydrogen will be produced from renewable solar and wind sources through Ad Astra Rocket Company Costa Rica, decarbonizing the fuel's well-to-wheel production cycle.

Las Catalinas was designed to be car-free and walkable throughout the entire town. However, the Toyota Mirai car-sharing service will allow visitors and residents of the town to travel throughout Guanacaste with zero-emissions, according to Las Catalinas.

NASA to Provide $6 Million for University R&D Program on Hydrogen-Powered Aircraft
|
On May 13, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign announced funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for a new program to research and develop a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain for aircraft. NASA will provide $6 million over the next three years for the program, known as the Center for Cryogenic High-Efficiency Electrical Technologies for Aircraft (CHEETA).
According to Phillip Ansell, assistant professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Urbana-Champaign, the program focuses on the development of a fully electric aircraft platform that uses cryogenic liquid hydrogen as an energy storage method. Such a powertain has not been developed for planes yet, so the CHEETA program seeks to make foundational contributions in technologies that will enable fully electric aircraft in the future.

You are invited to participate in the Hydrogen-Metal Systems Gordon Research Conference in Castelldefels Spain this summer. The GRC conference provides an opportunity for researchers and students to be exposed to the latest developments in all aspects of metal-hydrogen interactions. The openness and format of the conference makes it an ideal environment for exchange of ideas and establishment of collaborations.
All talks are invited but all attendees are encouraged to submit a poster on novel and unpublished results in order to stimulate discussions during the evening sessions. Free afternoons are ideal periods for networking, group discussions, and informal one-on-one interactions. This is a good opportunity for young researchers and students to meet and speak to international experts in the field of metal-hydrogen interactions. The 2019 Conference on Hydrogen-Metal Systems will focus on understanding the interaction of hydrogen with materials from the atomic level, up to bulk properties to meet the need of a range of applications involving fuel cells from energy storage in space to hydrogen carriers for fuel cell power applications.

2019 Carl Moyer Program Funding Solicitation
|
The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) announced the availability of funds for the 2019 Carl Moyer Program and is currently accepting applications for eligible projects under Program Announcement
#PA2019-02. At least $30 million is available for this solicitation.
The application deadline is at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 . All applications must be received either electronically through the SCAQMD’s CMP Online Application Program or on paper with submittal to the SCAQMD Headquarters (21865 Copley Drive, Diamond Bar, CA 91765) no later than the application deadline.
Funding categories include:
- On-road heavy-duty vehicles, including transit fleet vehicles, drayage and other freight trucks, solid waste vehicles, public agency/utility vehicles and emergency vehicles fire apparatus)
- Off-road equipment including marine engine repower, shore power (if not subject to CARB's At-Berth Regulation), construction equipment, agricultural mobile equipment (loaders, tractors, water pulls, etc.), locomotives and cargo handling equipment
- Infrastructure to fuel or power a zero or near-zero emission heavy-duty vehicle or equipment, including on-road heavy-duty vehicles, cargo handling equipment and marine vessels (shore power)

The Commercial Vehicle Cleantech Challenge (CVCC) is a product innovation showcase and catalyst for the discovery of new and innovative, clean technology solutions for today’s trucking challenges.
Transportation fleets are facing increasing social, regulatory, and financial pressure to reduce their environmental footprint. Solutions that focus on better mileage, electrification, automation, emissions and minimizing impacts help maintain and improve their social license to operate while also providing solutions to problems faced by the industry as a whole.

U.S. Army - Sources Sought for 400 kWe Hydrogen Fuel Cell System
|
The Combat Capabilities Development Command Ground Vehicle System Center (CCDC GVSC) is planning to demonstrate a lightweight electrified combat vehicle in fiscal year 2025. One variant of the electrified platform will be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell system. Preliminary analysis of vehicle performance has shown that light and medium duty combat vehicles will require a hydrogen fuel cell system capable of producing 400 kWe net power output.
The hydrogen fuel cell should be a high technology readiness level (TRL) system that will operate on compressed hydrogen gas. The fuel cell architecture can incorporate a multi-stack arrangement to meet the required net power output of 400 kWe but should include a gross power capable of handling all balance of plant, thermal management, and other internal parasitic loads required to operate the fuel cell system. The hydrogen fuel cell system, to include all balance of plant components, should maintain a low noise signature of less than 60 dBa.
The fuel cell stacks and balance of plant will reside in an engine compartment that has an available volume of 85 cubic-feet. Thermal management components are not required to fit within engine compartment space claim and can be placed elsewhere on the vehicle to maximize air flow. In order to plan and proceed with a demonstration, CCDC GVSC has the need to understand the commercial maturity, availability, and rough cost of fuel cell systems at this power output size for utilization on combat vehicles.

Applications for Robert Rose Education Award in Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology
|
Open to current or recent graduate students at the Masters, Doctoral or Post-Doctoral level in relevant STEM fields (including those who have received the graduate degree within the past three years), the Rose Award provides for an academic year residency at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory including a three-week orientation seminar in Washington, D.C., conducted by the American Councils for International Education in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy.
The Rose Education Award commemorates the legacy of Robert Rose, founder of the U.S. Fuel Cell Council, the national trade association for fuel cell technologies in the U. S., which became the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association. Rose is well-known worldwide for his achievements in advancing hydrogen and fuel cell systems and paving the way for the U.S. Department of Energy Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Program over two decades ago.

BIRD Energy Call for Proposals
|
BIRD Energy has announced its next funding cycle for U.S.-Israel joint project proposals with a focus on Renewable Energy and Efficiency and Natural Gas Technologies.
To be considered, a project proposal must include R&D cooperation between two companies or cooperation between a company and a university/research institution (one from the U.S. and one from Israel). The proposal should have significant commercial potential and the project outcome should lead to commercialization.
Examples of research and development topics within the scope of this call are: Solar and Wind Power, Advanced Vehicle Technologies and Alternative Fuels, Smart Grid, Storage, Water-Energy Nexus, Advanced Manufacturing or any other Renewable Energy/Energy Efficiency technology. This year the topic of Natural gas technologies was also added to the scope.
The conditional grant per project is up to 50% of the R&D costs associated with the joint project, and up to a maximum of $1 million per project.
The application process is web-based and requires prior discussion with the BIRD Foundation.
The deadline for Executive Summaries is July 2, 2019, and full proposals are due by August 21, 2019. Decisions on projects selected for funding will be made in the end of October, 2019.

Champaign-Urbana MTD Electrolysis Hydrogen Fueling Station Request for Proposals
|
The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District (MTD) in Illinois announces the Request for Proposals (RFP) from hydrogen fuel suppliers to design, build, operate and maintain an Electrolysis Hydrogen Fueling Station with the capacity to support up to 12 buses at MTD’s Maintenance Center in Urbana, Illinois.
A mandatory pre-proposal conference will be held on May 30.

Pennsylvania ZEV Infrastructure Grant Program
|
The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently launched a new grant program for zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) charging and fueling stations to increase options for ZEV owners and encourage more people to consider these clean vehicles for their next car. The funding comes from Pennsylvania’s $118 million settlement with Volkswagen Group of America for cheating on U.S. Environmental Protection Agency emissions tests.
The grants are available through Governor Tom Wolf’s Driving PA Forward initiative. The goal of the initiative is to permanently reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) pollution from vehicles.
Up to $3 million in grants is available for acquisition, installation, operation, and maintenance of ZEV fast-charging equipment and hydrogen fuel cell equipment through 2019. Grants are awarded as reimbursements after completed projects, with a maximum amount of $500,000. The amount awarded depends on the charging or fueling capacity of the proposed equipment.
Application deadlines are 4:00 PM on July 15 and December 16, 2019. All applications from each period will be reviewed.

Department of Energy Solicitation for the High Performance Computing for Energy Innovation Initiative
|
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced nearly $5.2 million for a new solicitation under the
High Performance Computing for Energy Innovation (HPC4EI) Initiative, the umbrella program for the HPC4Manufacturing (HPC4Mfg), HPC4Materials (HPC4Mtls), and HPC4Mobility programs. The new funding opportunity seeks qualified industry partners to work collaboratively with DOE's national laboratories on projects that use High Performance Computing (HPC) to solve key technical challenges. These technical challenges include development and optimization of modeling and simulation codes, porting and scaling of applications, application of data analytics, and applied research and development of tools or methods.
There will be three areas of focus.
Area 1: HPC4Mtls
The HPC4Mtls Program is sponsored by EERE's Fuel Cell Technologies Office and Vehicle Technologies Office to enhance the U.S. materials development, fabrication, and manufacturing industry to investigate, improve, and scale methods that will accelerate the development of materials that perform well in severe and complex energy application environments. This solicitation is aimed at demonstrating the benefit of HPC toward these goals within one year.
The HPC4Mtls program seeks proposals that will address key challenges in developing, modifying, and/or qualifying new or modified materials that perform well in severe and complex energy application environments through the use of HPC modeling, simulation, and data analysis.
Area 2: HPC4Mfg
The HPC4Mfg Program is led by EERE's Advanced Manufacturing Office with a focus on establishing collaborations that address key manufacturing challenges by applying modeling, simulation, and data analysis. The Office of Fossil Energy and EERE's Vehicle Technologies Office and Building Technologies Office also sponsor select projects in this portfolio. The program aims to improve energy efficiency, increase productivity, reduce cycle time, enable next-generation technologies, test control system algorithms, investigate intensified processes, lower energy cost, and accelerate innovation.
The HPC4Mfg Program seeks projects that will use HPC modeling and simulation to overcome manufacturing process challenges resulting in reduced energy consumption and/or increased productivity.
Area 3: HPC4Mobility
The HPC4Mobility Program is sponsored by the Vehicle Technologies Office's Energy Efficient Mobility Systems (EEMS) Program. The mission of EEMS is to conduct early stage research and development (R&D) at the vehicle, traveler, and system level, to create new knowledge, tools, and insights and technology solutions that increase mobility energy productivity for individuals and businesses. As mobility technologies continuously evolve, EEMS operates within the interface of vehicle systems and transportation systems.
The HPC4Mobility Program is interested in collaborations that address key mobility challenges in developing, modifying, and/or qualifying new or modified software, hardware, and implementation solutions that perform well in complex transportation/mobility systems in rural and metropolitan areas.
Eligibility for the HPC4Mfg and HPC4Mtls programs is limited to entities that manufacture or develop products in the United States for commercial applications and the organizations that support them. Relevant government entities are eligible to receive awards from the HPC4Mobility Program only. Selected projects and follow-on projects will be awarded up to $300,000 to support compute cycles and work performed by the national laboratory partners. The industry partner must provide a participant contribution of at least 20% of the DOE funding for the project. Selected follow-on project partners must provide at least 50% of the DOE funding for the project.

NYSERDA Stationary Fuel Cell Program
|
NYSERDA’s Stationary Fuel Cell Program aims to quickly increase the amount of electricity produced by fuel cell systems in New York State. By providing $15 million over two years, NYSERDA will help facilities to reduce the upfront costs of installing and operating fuel cells and support commercially viable fuel cell systems that help lower greenhouse gas emissions.
NYSERDA will provide $7.5 million a year for two years for a total of $15 million to support new installations of stationary fuel cell systems at eligible sites. No system can receive more than $1 million from NYSERDA.
Incentives are divided into two main categories:
- Total Base Incentives, which include base incentives determined by installed capacity, and grid independent incentives based on the capability for operating when there are outages
- Bonus Incentives which are based on location of the site and whether the site is deemed to be critical infrastructure

South Coast AQMD Hydrogen Infrastructure Partnership Program
|
This Program Opportunity Notice (PON) seeks to expand the availability of hydrogen refueling infrastructure in the South Coast AQMD region by making available a source of co-funding that can be accessed by the
Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC’s) strategic partners. The intent is to provide funding that can be used to improve the financial viability of a candidate hydrogen refueling station that has already undergone vetting by the Energy Commission or South Coast AQMD, or is being proposed by a public agency or industry stakeholder that will undergo evaluation by the MSRC, Energy Commission, or South Coast AQMD. The goal is to have this funding source readily available so it can be tapped by our strategic partners during and within the course of their regular procurement processes.
To this end, the MSRC has allocated $3,000,000 in Clean Transportation Funding from its FY 2016-’18 Work Program for the MSRC’s Hydrogen Infrastructure Partnership Program. This is an
initial funding allocation; the MSRC reserves the right to increase the funding available under this PON by allocating additional funds from either the FY 2016-’18 Discretionary Fund or a future Work Program.
The period of submittal under this PON closes on April 10, 2020, unless extended by the MSRC.
