Toyota Achieves Significant Heavy-Duty Hydrogen Truck and Fueling Milestones

On October 20, FCHEA member Toyota Motor North America announced that its Hydrogen Headquarters (H2HQ) division has made steady progress in fueling improvements for heavy-duty fuel cell trucks.

Toyota recently installed two mobile hydrogen fueling devices at North American Parts Center California (NAPCC), its largest parts distribution facility in the U.S. Toyota plans to use the mobile fuelers to support Toyota operations by fueling heavy-duty fuel cell trucks, commissioned through Hyroad Energy, hauling freight from the Port of Los Angeles to Ontario, and throughout the region. A permanent station is planned to be built at the location and Toyota will later integrate heavy-duty trucks with its own certified fuel cell powertrain.

Separately, in a public-private partnership, Toyota is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) in Golden, Colorado, to research several initiatives, including 70 MPa high-flow hydrogen fueling for heavy-duty trucks. Toyota and NLR engineers and researchers have performed multiple rounds of testing per SAE J2601-5 standards, successfully demonstrating that Toyota-powered heavy-duty trucks can be refueled in about eight minutes for a range of up to 450 miles.

America’s AI race won’t be won by hitting pause on data centers

On October 4, FuelCell Energy’s Jason Few published an opinion piece in Data Center Dynamics arguing that moratoriums on data center development do not pause demand for computing and only determine where that demand is met. Few points to New York’s first-in-the-nation statewide moratorium on new hyperscale data centers and similar local pauses. He acknowledges that community concerns about grid capacity, power costs, and environmental impact deserve serious consideration. His case is that developers are already adapting with behind-the-meter power, including fuel cells paired with battery storage, which reduces reliance on constrained transmission and avoids shifting infrastructure costs onto other ratepayers. He adds that fuel cells generate electricity without combustion, with lower emissions, noise, and water use than conventional generation. Few concludes that the debate should be about how to build this infrastructure faster, cleaner, quieter, and in partnership with host communities.
