FuelCell Energy and Toyota Announce Completion of Tri-gen Project
|
On September 7, FCHEA members FuelCell Energy and Toyota Motor North America announced the completion of its "Tri-gen system" project at Toyota's Port of Long Beach operations in Long Beach, California. FuelCell Energy has contracted with Toyota to supply the products of Tri-gen under a 20-year purchase agreement.
The tri-gen system produces 2.3 megawatts (MW) of renewable electricity, part of which will be off-taken by Toyotas Logistics Services (TLS) Long Beach to support its operations at the port. It can also generate up to 1,200 kg/day which will provide for TLS Long Beach’s fueling needs for its incoming light-duty fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) Mirai, while also supplying hydrogen to the nearby heavy-duty hydrogen refueling station to support TLS logistics and drayage operations at the port. Hydrogen production can be ramped up and down based on needs/requirements.

On July 19, The U.S. Department of Energy’s Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office, in collaboration with the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) Clean Hydrogen Initiative, launched H2 Twin Cities 2023, a global initiative that connects cities and communities around the world to collaborate, share ideas, and learn from each other as they deploy clean-hydrogen solutions.
To encourage participation by communities in developing economies, H2 Twin Cities 2023 will focus on pairing Mentor and Mentee cities from different countries and continents that will result in measurable impacts by fostering market adoption, scaling up hydrogen technologies, providing training and outreach resources, and achieving emissions reductions—all while advancing energy and environmental justice and social equity.
The deadline to apply is October 19, 2023.
Mentor and Mentee cities must self-assemble and submit a joint application. To facilitate pairings, H2 Twin Cities is compiling a teaming partner list, which allows cities and regions to express their interest to potential applicants and to explore potential partnerships.

NYSERDA Announces Nearly $14 Million Announced to Advance Clean Hydrogen Innovation
|
On August 18, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced nearly $14 million initiative to advance clean hydrogen research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) projects. The first round of funding makes up to $8 million available for projects that address the challenges of decarbonizing industrial process heat and advancing clean hydrogen production and renewable energy integration.
Through the first round, NYSERDA is seeking applicants comprised of single entities or teams to compete for funding under two technical challenge areas including hydrogen applications to decarbonize industrial process heat and clean hydrogen production and integration with renewable energy.
Applications for Round One will be accepted through 3:00 p.m. on October 23, 2023.

U.S. Department of Energy Seeks Independent Entity for New Demand-Side Initiative to Accelerate Clean Hydrogen Economy
|
On September 15, the U.S. Department of Energy released a Request for Proposal (RFP) soliciting an independent entity to administer a demand-side initiative to help accelerate the commercial liftoff of the clean hydrogen economy.
To support the Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs) program, DOE is seeking an independent, not-for-profit U.S. entity with world-class market and financial expertise to execute DOE-designed measures to de-risk clean hydrogen through demand certainty. The entity will work directly with the H2Hubs awardees and incorporate their input to structure the program and ensure regional differences and needs are accounted for. The demand-side initiative seeks to ensure that both producers and end users in the H2Hubs have the market certainty they need during the early years of production to unlock private investment and realize the full potential of clean hydrogen. The RFP is informed by the Request for Information (RFI) that DOE released in July 2023.
Responses to the RFP are due by October 26, 2023.

U.S. Department of Energy Announces $50 Million for Distributed Energy Systems Demonstrations
|
On September 26, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstration (OCED) released a new $50 million funding opportunity to help the U.S. develop more reliable, resilient, and cost-effective energy systems to better support our rapidly changing electric grid and the growth of electric vehicles (EV), energy storage, and the electrification of buildings and industry. OCED will provide up to 50 percent of the cost share for 2-4 utility and/or private sector led projects to demonstrate the reliable operation and financial value of connected energy systems with high levels of renewable generation and a variety of connected energy assets.
Concept papers are due by November 16, 2023, at 5 p.m. EDT.

Department of Commerce Announces New Funding Opportunity for Small-Scale Supplier Projects
|
On September 29, 2023, CHIPS for America released its second funding opportunity to strengthen the resilience of the semiconductor supply chain, advance U.S. technology leadership, and support vibrant domestic semiconductor clusters. This funding opportunity seeks applications for projects for the construction, expansion, or modernization of commercial facilities for the fabrication of leading-edge, current-generation, and mature-node semiconductors with capital investments less than $300 million.
The application process includes two primary phases. In the first phase, applicants will be asked to submit a concept plan describing how their proposed project addresses core program priorities. Concept plans will be accepted between December 1, 2023, and February 1, 2024. The Department will then invite the most promising applicants to the second phase, where they will have the opportunity to submit a full application.
