Ohio Democrat Governor Mike DeWine CONTINUES to INTENTIONALLY LIE to YOU in his effort to deny YOU a much NEEDED refund of YOUR Money HE and the State has taken from YOU through OVER TAXATION. He claims with NO BASIS IN FACT that the State of Ohio "can't afford" a 90 day suspension of the 38.5¢ p/gal gas tax and the 47¢ p/gal diesel Fuel Taxes. Here are the facts:
Ohio Ends Fiscal Year Nearly $1.8 Billion over Estimates
Summarizing what is her final full fiscal year, Office of Budget and Management (OBM) Director Kimberley Murnieks told Hannah News Monday (7/6/26) that the state ended FY26 “on a strong note. Its fiscal position has never been stronger.”
Specifically, the state brought in nearly $1.8 billion over estimates, according to the preliminary data released by OBM. The state brought in a total of $30.9 billion – 6.1 percent higher than the estimated revenue of nearly $29.2 billion.
And rather surprisingly, the personal income tax, which has been repeatedly cut by the Legislature, brought in $1.1 billion of that excess. However, Murnieks pointed out that was largely driven by strong returns by the stock market in 2025 – something that “may or may not” happen again.
Of the $1.8 billion excess revenue, the Legislature appropriated $1.2 billion as part of budget correction bill HB479 (Schmidt). Those appropriations include the following:
- $35 million to the state’s Rainy Day Fund, taking it slightly over $4 billion – “the highest balance ever.”
Underspending Nears $800M at End of FY26
While state coffers benefitted from larger than forecast tax collections in FY26, the state’s bottom line also was helped by underspending.
According to the monthly financial report for June from the Office of Budget and Management (OBM), FY26 General Revenue Fund disbursements were below estimates by $778 million or 1.7 percent.
A large chunk of that underspending is attributable to Medicaid, which saw FY26 GRF expenditures come in $450 million or 2 percent below estimates.
So Let's do the Math that DeWine Apparently Can't or Won't Do!
$1.8 Billion in Revenue Collect by OVER TAXATION OF YOU!
+ $800 Million in Underspending
$2.6 Billion SURPLUS
-$1.2 Billion they Just SPENT on Non-Budget Items
$1.4 BILLION LEFT OVER
+ $4 BILLION in the Ohio "Rainy Day Fund" - THE MOST EVER!
$5.4 BILLION OF YOUR MONEY THAT THE STATE DOES NOT NEED
-$750 MILLION for the 90 Day Fuel Tax Suspension
$4.6 BILLION SURPLUS
Yet On Friday, at a grocery store, the governor said that the proposal, as it is, would be disastrous.
"It's not just taking it away from state highways and keeping our state highways up and building some of the roads that we want to build that people all over Ohio want to see built, but it's also taking a massive amount of money away from our townships, our villages, our cities, and our counties, and they depend on this money," he said.
The ODOT money is essential for safety, he added.
"It just, I think, will be devastating," the governor continued. "The next governor, I don't know who the next governor is going to be, but the next governor will face a real crisis if that $750 million is taken away."
What?? NO MONEY would be "taken away"!!! What are you talking about DeWine??? The Legislature will be moving SURPLUS MONEY into the ODOT fund to replace the Fuel Taxes that will go to We the People! DeWine knows these FACTS! Why is he LYING to Legislators and the Media to keep every Ohioan from Saving on their Fuel Costs?? He is trying to protect the State's Rainy Day Fund but Guess What?? Many Ohioans DON'T HAVE ANYTHING LEFT IN THEIR RAINY DAY FUND!!!
