Fuerzas Unidas Caucus of the

Democratic Party of New Mexico

NEWSLETTER

Vol. I (2)

Fuerzas Unidas is Starting 2022 with Energy and Excitement!!!

Tara López, FZUC Leadership Team

Fuerzas Unidas (FZUC) will hold a caucus membership meeting Monday, February 28th at 6 pm with an exciting roster of guests to get you energized for all that is on the horizon. Members will have the opportunity to meet their FZUC Regional Representatives at the meeting, and we will also be honored to have Deputy Secretary Dr. Patricia Trujillo of the Higher Education Department in attendance. Dr. Trujillo will share details of the passage of the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship Act, deemed “one of the most generous free college programs” in the United States.

Your participation at this February 28th meeting will add to our momentum and contribute to the many projects that we have been tirelessly working on in the past few months. For instance, since a media presence is crucial to reaching out to our communities, we are taking the first steps in developing our own caucus website at our meeting and invite your participation. The website will heighten our media profile, attract additional members, and keep us all engaged.

Furthermore, with a focus on informing and empowering our membership and communities, we are planning a candidate forum for the following state-wide races: Attorney General, Treasurer, and State Auditor. The forums are tentatively planned for mid to late March. We are looking for volunteers to work with us as we organize this unique opportunity for New Mexicans across the state to engage with candidates on issues that are of importance to you and your families.

Membership is at the heart of this caucus. While we do require membership dues, if you are experiencing any economic difficulties, please reach out to our FZUC Treasurer, Vicky Estrada-Bustillo at [email protected] for information on how we can support you. We are fortunate to have received donations from numerous members to assist members in hardship.

Finally, with our motto, “La Unión Hace la Fuerza” (“Unity Makes Us Strong!”), your participation is invaluable, so we want to hear from you! If you have ideas or suggestions, please, reach out to any of us at [email protected].

Help us make 2022 an amazing year for our communities and for NM Democrats!

La Union Hace La Fuerza

By Ennio García-Miera

L

Details from DPNM

Please note: The following article first appeared in the Bernalillo County Blue Review. We felt this article would provide key information about the statewide convention that might be helpful to our members. Information will be sent out soon to all delegates.

Democratic Party of New Mexico State Convention 2022

This is the official Call for the DPNM 2022 Pre-Primary Election Nominating Convention.

As stated in Article II, Rule 4.1.1 in the DPNM Rules, the Call shall be issued at least 60 days prior to the date of the convention. The 2022 Pre-Primary Election Nominating convention shall be held on Saturday, March 05, 2022, at the Roswell Convention Center (912 N Main St, Roswell, NM 88201).

Required Business of the Pre-Primary Convention

We are required to hold the Pre-Primary Convention per state law and DPNM Rules. At the convention, delegates from all New Mexico counties will vote for their preferred Democratic candidate for each statewide and federal office up for election in 2022. Each candidate who receives 20% or more of the votes of convention delegates will be placed on the primary ballot. In each contested race, the candidate who receives the most convention delegate votes will be listed first on the primary ballot, with other candidates listed in descending order. Convention delegates will also consider the adoption of a new Democratic Party platform.

Details of the Pre-Primary Convention

The 2022 Democratic Pre-Primary Election Nominating Convention will be held on Saturday,

March 05, 2022, at the Roswell Convention Center (912 N Main St, Roswell, NM 88201).

In-person registration for the convention will begin at 10:00 am, and the convention will be called to order at 12:00 pm.

We will be offering online registration prior to March 05; we will communicate details about this process in the coming weeks.

We will be following mandatory COVID safety protocols during the convention:

  • All convention attendees will be required to sign an affidavit verifying that they are fully vaccinated.
  • All convention attendees will be required to wear a face mask at all times. Face shields without a face mask will not be accepted.
  • Face masks must be worn properly, covering the nose and mouth at all times.
  • Individuals who do not follow our COVID safety protocols or who do not sign the vaccination affidavit will not be admitted to the convention and will be removed from the convention.

Accommodations: DPNM will arrange hotel room blocks. Please stay tuned for more details as the convention approaches. Information will be posted on the DPNM website.

Voting Pursuant to the Pre-Primary Convention

DPNM strives to facilitate full participation in our democracy. We understand that some members of our party organization might not feel safe traveling to the convention this year. We believe that everyone should have a voice in our democratic process independent of health, financial security, or geographic location.

All convention voting for the platform and candidates will be conducted through an absentee voting process to ensure that everyone within our party organization is able to participate fully in all aspects of the convention process.

Information for SCC Members

All State Central Committee members are automatic delegates to the Pre-Primary Convention. Most County parties will be holding a county Pre-Primary Convention and electing additional convention delegates. We strongly encourage you to help your county party leadership conduct a successful election.

Information for County Party Leaders

Most county parties will need to hold county party delegate elections, which must be completed at least ten (10) days before the state party pre-primary election nominating convention. This year, county party delegate elections must be completed no later than February 23, 2022. We will be reaching out to your county party leadership shortly with information about allocated delegates and the requirements for filling those positions.

We look forward to seeing you and your County delegation in Roswell for the Pre-Primary Convention. If you have any questions about the process, please contact DPNM Executive Director Sean Ward at [email protected].

Sincerely,

Jessica Velasquez, Chair of the Democratic Party of New Mexico
