SHORT ANSWER QUESTION 3: IMPACT OF FULBRIGHT AWARD

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program application includes three short answer questions that you should thoughtfully address. Today's advising corner focuses on the third about the impact of the Fulbright award.

1,000 CHARACTERS - MAXIMUM

This short answer question must be no more than 1,000 characters in length, including spaces.

The answer will be entered directly into a box in the Fulbright application portal. You should minimally use paragraph breaks in the portal to ensure that the full answer is not cut off when the .pdf version of your completed application is created.

FULBRIGHT GUIDANCE

Fulbright shares: An objective of the Fulbright Program is to:

“support activities and projects with broad multiplier effects. As a relatively small number of persons can participate in any of these, it is desirable that they be persons who are or who are likely to be in positions to share their experiences and knowledge with others.” Describe your career and/or educational plans after completing a Fulbright grant. How will your Fulbright experience help you reach these future goals? How will you share your Fulbright experience with your community upon your return from the grant?

APPROACH

Think through how the Fulbright grant you are proposing connects with your previous experiences and your future. Of course, your future plans may change over time. However, this question allows you to explore why – in your current thinking – this particular Fulbright award in this particular location will help prepare you for your educational and/or professional goals, as well as your long-term interests.

WRITING TIP

As with short answer question one (flexibility and adaptability) and short answer question two (community engagement), please carefully consider this prompt. It is important that you describe how this proposed grant fits within your short-term and long-term plans.

This prompt is an opportunity to highlight for the reviewers how you anticipate the Fulbright experience will be a meaningful (or perhaps transformative) one in your life and how this structured time of intercultural exchange will inform your activities and outlook after the grant ends. Please include specific ideas for how you will share about the Fulbright experience after the grant concludes.

Binational Business Program - Mexico

Guadalupe Avila, using an umbrella, at the Piedra del Sol

From Guadalupe Avila (CAS'20, MiM'22) - "The Binational Business program is not your typical Fulbright grant. Grantees are placed in Mexican companies and businesses and take courses related to international business at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM). I spend most of my time working at a tequila company (where else but in Mexico would this be possible!) as a business strategist and recently took part in an exciting product launch in collaboration with a globally recognized Latin artist. Beyond my internship, as a Mexican-American, it has been a beautiful experience connecting with my roots by reconnecting with family, participating in Mexican celebrations like Día de Muertos and posadas, and of course eating my way through Mexico City."

Application Suggestion: "My biggest tip for those applying to the Binational Business program is to have clear, compelling answers to two key questions: 'Why Mexico?' (you are not just working abroad — you're being asked to serve as a global ambassador) and 'What is your ideal internship or industry?' (reviewers value clear career goals paired with openness to different opportunities)."
