SHORT ANSWER QUESTION 1: FLEXIBILITY AND ADAPTABILITY

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program application includes three short answer questions that you should thoughtfully address. Today's advising corner focuses on the first about flexibility and adaptability.

2,000 CHARACTERS - MAXIMUM

This short answer question must be no more than 2,000 characters in length, including spaces.

The answer will be entered directly into a box in the Fulbright application portal. You should minimally use paragraph breaks in the portal to ensure that the full answer is not cut off when the .pdf version of your completed application is created.

FULBRIGHT GUIDANCE

Fulbright shares: Please explain how you will adapt to working and living in a new environment in the host country. Consider the ways in which you have grown throughout your life that make you the individual you are today. How have you demonstrated these qualities in your academic, professional, or personal life? Use specific examples from your personal experiences.

APPROACH

A helpful approach before you begin writing involves Reflection and Outlining.

  • Reflect: Spend some time thinking about your background and the many experiences that have gotten you to this moment in your life. Then ask yourself questions like: Which experiences have been the most transformative and why? What have I learned from these parts or times of my life? And importantly, how have they informed my goals, interests, outlook, and values in such a way as to position me successfully for this particular Fulbright opportunity.
  • Outline: Given this is a brief answer versus a longer autobiography, you will need to make strategic choices about what experiences to include that directly connect to the topic of flexibility and adaptability. As you reflect on the past, the important aspects of your life, and how these specifically relate to life as a Fulbrighter in your chosen host country, begin outlining your ideas. Take note of the content you want to include and how you will move from one paragraph to the next.

ANSWER INTRODUCTION

Also consider how you want to open this short answer:

  • Do you want to share a story about a profound experience that has made you interested in living in a global setting for research, study, or teaching?
  • Do you want to highlight an "aha moment" from your education that helps explain your motivation for this global experience?
  • Did you have a teacher or professor who inspired you to want to mentor and teach?

These are a few examples!

Two Fulbright grantees, including Daniella Passariello, stand on beach sand holding a sign that says, Fulbright

From Daniella Passariello (SFS'23) - "I'm spending my Fulbright year at the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature, focusing on biodiversity finance. My main project is leading an international white paper that draws on a global survey of 50 Conservation Trust Funds, in collaboration with academics in the United States. The goal is to present the paper at CBD COP17 and, hopefully, publish it in an academic journal in the future."

Application Suggestion: "The most important advice I got during my process is that before applying, take time to be brutally honest with yourself about what you want out of a Fulbright experience. Knowing your goals and your boundaries will make it much easier to decide which award to pursue, where to go, and how to craft an authentic and strong application."
