Georgetown Fulbrighter Spotlight

Max Levine (SFS'22, GSAS'24)

Fulbright/CAASIC Arabic Language Study Grant

Group indoor photo of Max Levine (holding a certificate) with Dr. Azza Hassanein and Hany Serafeen, the director and the administrator of the program

From Max Levine (SFS'22, GSAS'24) - "This joint Fulbright with the American University in Cairo's flagship Arabic language and literature program focuses on aiding students with advanced Arabic proficiency to achieve superior level fluency in Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian Arabic through literature and content courses. The program runs at the Tahrir campus in downtown Cairo . . . ."

Application Suggestion: "Make use of the many resources out there for applicants. The [Center for Research & Fellowships] is really invested in applicants being successful. Reading through sample essays from applicants that the office has on file helped me a lot as I was drafting my essays, as did conversations with staff at the center, alumni, and my mentor. Consider joining one of the Slack groups to see if you can connect with other applicants and get more information about your award type and timelines. Also, definitely think deeply about why you want to do what you are applying for and consider what goals you want to set for yourself. Your thoughtfulness and determination will show in your essays. Good luck!!"

RECOMMENDATION FORMS FOR THE FULBRIGHT ENGLISH TEACHING ASSISTANT (ETA) AWARDS

Once you have spent time researching where you would like to go for an ETA award and understanding the location's specific description and requirements (e.g., applicant's teaching experiences, language proficiency, and eligibility), you will need to think of three recommenders who can complete a short-answer electronic form.

QUESTIONS

To help identify recommenders you will invite, consider the questions they will be asked to address - 750 characters each:

  • Based on your observation of and experience with the applicant, comment on their ability to adapt to the host country.
  • In your view, how has this applicant demonstrated qualities associated with teaching or mentoring?
  • Based on your observation, how might the applicant engage with the community in the host country? This can include students, faculty, and community members among others.
  • Based on your observation, comment on the applicant's ability to represent the U.S. abroad and be a cultural ambassador.
  • Please comment on any other factors which you believe may have a bearing on the applicant's potential to have a successful experience abroad as a Fulbright ETA (comments regarding academic and/or personal experience, maturity, adaptability and flexibility are welcome).

ADVICE

  • Reach out to recommenders as soon as possible to give them enough time to complete the recommendation forms by Georgetown's September 1 (12 NOON ET, not midnight) deadline.
  • If possible, schedule a meeting with your recommenders to go over your goals for the Fulbright grant year related to teaching and living in the host country. This discussion will likely be helpful for them before they begin completing the forms.
  • The three recommenders you identify should be individuals who, collectively, can best address the prompts in the form.
  • Note: Fulbright does not allow members of your family to write recommendations.
  • Note: Fulbright encourages that one ETA recommendation, at a minimum, be from someone who is not a professor, such as coaches or work supervisors.
