SHORT ANSWER QUESTION 1: FLEXIBILITY AND ADAPTABILITY

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program application includes three short answer questions that you should thoughtfully address. Today's advising corner focuses on the first about flexibility and adaptability.

2,000 CHARACTERS - MAXIMUM

This short answer question must be no more than 2,000 characters in length, including spaces. 2,000 characters (with spaces) approximately equals 340 words.

The answer will be entered directly into a box in the Fulbright application portal. You should write one continuous block of text without separate paragraphs. (Adding paragraphs using hard returns will cause an error in how the application is displayed for reviewers.)

FULBRIGHT GUIDANCE

Fulbright shares: Please explain how you will adapt to working and living in a new environment in the host country. Consider the ways in which you have grown throughout your life that make you the individual you are today. How have you demonstrated these qualities in your academic, professional, or personal life? Use specific examples from your personal experiences.

APPROACH

A helpful approach before you begin writing involves Reflection and Outlining.

  • Reflect: Spend some time thinking about your background and the many experiences that have gotten you to this moment in your life. Then ask yourself questions like: Which experiences have been the most transformative and why? What have you learned from these parts or times of your life? And importantly, how have they informed your goals, interests, outlook, and values in such a way as to position you successfully for this particular Fulbright opportunity.
  • OutlineGiven this is a brief answer versus a longer autobiography, you will need to make strategic choices about what experiences to include. As you reflect on the past, the important aspects of your life, and how these specifically relate to life as a Fulbrighter in your chosen host country, begin outlining your ideas. Take note of the specific content you want to include and how you will move from one paragraph to the next.

ANSWER INTRODUCTION

Also consider how you want to open this short answer:

  • Do you want to share a story about a profound experience that has made you interested in living in a global setting for research, study, or teaching?
  • Do you want to highlight an "aha moment" from your education that helps explain your motivation for this global experience?
  • Did you have a teacher or professor who inspired you to want to mentor and teach?

These are a few examples!

From Maximilian Goetz (MSB'24) - "I teach seventh and eighth grade classes at two different junior high schools and see each class once a week. That means I interact with roughly 350 students on a weekly basis! On some Fridays, I visit a different elementary or junior high school and teach there for one day. In the evenings, I spend time with my fellow Fulbright ETAs and attend language exchanges in nearby Kaohsiung City. On weekends, I usually travel somewhere in Taiwan. The public transportation system in Taiwan is very good, and it's possible to reach most places around the island within four hours by train."

Application Suggestion: "When I wrote my application, I tried not to get in my head about 'if I don't get Fulbright, then all the time I spent on the application will be a waste.' Rather, I saw the Fulbright application as the perfect opportunity to reflect on myself. Though writing essays will never be the most fun activity, when you approach it from this angle, it seems less like a chore."

Start Writing Early

Spend the weeks ahead working on the various components of your Fulbright application, including your statement of grant purpose and short answer questions. By early to mid-August, a solid draft should be ready. Once you LOCK (not submit) that draft (by September 1 at the latest), the center can begin working to match you with a campus mentor.

You will then have time to make updates before Fulbright's October deadline!

Contact Us!

Be sure to schedule an appointment with an advisor to discuss your application well before the September 1 internal deadline.
