RESEARCH/STUDY STATEMENT OF GRANT PURPOSE

If you are applying for a Fulbright award, you will need to write a thoughtful Statement of Grant Purpose.

ACADEMIC INTEREST

Research and study projects are guided by and build on applicants' previous academic experiences and developing scholarly interests.

The former allows applicants to generate and share knowledge about that interest area through a well-designed research project, and the latter allows applicants to explore it through graduate-level degree study in an academic program.

In both cases, applicants should establish a clear connection between the project's focus and the host country.

6,000 CHARACTERS - MAXIMUM

The Statement of Grant Purpose for research/study awards must be no more than 6,000 characters in length (with spaces and punctuation included).

The statement text will be entered directly into a box in the Fulbright application portal. Applicants should minimally use paragraph breaks in the portal to ensure that the full statement is not cut off when the .pdf version of their completed application is created.

GUIDANCE

As applicants begin outlining their Statements of Grant Purpose, they should review what Fulbright recommends they write about for an independent research project or enrolling in a graduate program. (Visit Statement of Grant Purpose section for research/study.)

Importantly, according to Fulbright, the project must be "intellectually compelling and feasible." The Fulbright webpage contains two lists of points that applicants should consider before beginning to outline their statements: 1) for research project proposals and 2) for graduate study project proposals.

CRF RESOURCES

Applicants can review two worksheets - one for research and one for study. Each contains guidance that will be helpful while thinking about and outlining content ideas.

VISIT US

Applicants should visit the Center for Research & Fellowships (310 Car Barn, 3520 Prospect Street NW) to review example statements from previous application cycles. Email fulbright@georgetown.edu to learn more about summer hours for the center's Car Barn office.

Maria Corvacho Marrugo (SFS'25)

English Teaching Assistant - Brazil

In an indoor setting, Maria Corvacho Marrugo holds a Fulbright Brasil flag next to the flags of Brazil and the United States

From Maria Corvacho Marrugo (SFS'25) - "I am currently an English Teaching Assistant at the Universidade Estadual do Piaui (UESPI) in Teresina, Brazil, where I teach English conversation classes with my co-ETA to a mix of students and professors. I also teach English to students participating in UESPI's PARFOR Equidade program, an initiative between the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) and the Secretariat for Continuing Education, Literacy for Young People and Adults, Diversity and Inclusion. This program aims to provide access to specific higher-education training for teachers-in-training in the interior of the state of Piauí. It has been so rewarding to contribute directly to education access and equity in Brazil via my grant!"

Application Suggestion: "My biggest piece of advice for those of you working on your applications is to keep track of your progress on all the individual components—from the short answers to your recommendations to the personal information you need to fill out in the portal—in one place, like a spreadsheet. There are a lot of moving parts in this application process, and staying organized with what you are working on makes a huge difference, so nothing sneaks up on you. Good luck! You're in great hands with the CRF!"

Writing Center

As you think about and work on drafts of your Fulbright application this summer, we want to highlight Georgetown's Writing Center.

From the center's website: "The Georgetown Writing Center is a free resource offered by the Georgetown Writing Program. We provide synchronous peer tutoring by trained graduate and undergraduate students who can assist you at any point in the writing process."

Visit the Writing Center.
