MOUNTAIN HIGHLIGHT

HOOPER PLANETARIUM

The Hooper Planetarium had a very busy December! We had the usual Friday Starry Nights and Holiday Laser Show events, but we also debuted a new event: PJs in the Planetarium! During our PJ event, guests came in their pajamas to eat popcorn in the planetarium and watch our new feature film, The Alien who Stole Christmas. In the lobby, guests created their own holiday axolotl snow globe to take home and helped us make a “Winter Wonderland” with instant snow. We are so pleased with the outcome and response that we hope to make this a regular holiday event – mark your calendars now to come join us in December 2026!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Meet Stratton!

Stratton started volunteering this past summer, when he was 14. He decided to volunteer because he wanted to do something he loved with people his age. He quickly learned how much he loved it and came consistently all summer. He has even continued volunteering his time during the school year. He is most comfortable on the Farm and has a dream to train horses in Kentucky one day or to be an underwater welder. Stratton became quite the farm hand during his time at Roper Mountain, working hard, maintaining a positive attitude, and jumping into whatever project that was going on. Over the course of the summer, it was fun to see Stratton come out of his shell, along with a lot of our other teen volunteers, who learn so much about customer service and guest engagement during their time at Roper. When asked what his favorite part of volunteering is, he answered “being at the Farm and seeing the snakes.” Thank you, Stratton, for challenging yourself during every shift and for being such an asset to Roper Mountain!

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

This month, we recognize Broad River Electric Cooperative for supporting our scholarship program for high poverty schools to attend field trips at Roper Mountain. Their generous support provided an opportunity for 6th grade students from Sims Middle School in Union County to experience our new engineering labs. This was the first time students from Sims Middle have attended Roper Mountain!

We also thank Fairway Subaru for their support as one of our new Community Partners. Their support has provided new equipment and materials for our school lessons, including our new 4th grade Need for Speed lab.

Thank you, Broad River Electric Cooperative and Fairway Subaru for helping us fulfill our mission to ignite the natural curiosity of all learners to explore and shape their world.
