Volume VII | JANUARY 2021
The Year of our Lord 2021
As we enter into 2021 A.D. (Anno Domini) not CE (common era), we as marriage preparation ministers are facing challenges that we never thought we would. Among them are: couples deciding on a civil marriage instead of a Sacramental marriage, couples putting off a church wedding indefinitely, meeting safely to properly prepare couples who are going ahead with a church wedding, & the list goes on. So, are we to just "throw in the towel" and hide away until all this passes over? Nay I say! There is hope ahead! Just to let you know what we are seeing here at the Diocese......the number of couples registering for the one day retreat is increasing, calls from couples/parishes concerning couples inquiring about Sacramental marriage are also increasing, & in our interaction with couples attending the retreats, a positive & upbeat outlook has replaced one of fear and anxiety. So "chin up" as it were, & keep doing what you are doing because you are making a difference!
"We give thanks to God always for you all, constantly mentioning you in our prayers, remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ."1 Thessalonians 1:2,3
Now, on to other things...
Every year from February 7th to the 14th we celebrate "National Marriage Week" and World Marriage Day (Sunday, Feb. 14). It is a week dedicated to celebrate and support marriages in the United States.
The theme for 2021 is "To Have, To Hold, To Honor."

The USCCB Secretariat on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth offers the following resources to bishops, priests, deacons, married couples, and lay men and women to help celebrate and live the great gift of married life.

Preaching Resource for World Marriage Day  (Sunday, February 14): reflections on the Scriptures of the day to assist bishops, priests, and deacons in preaching about marriage.

Be sure to utilize the At Home Couples Retreats for yourselves! They are in both English & Spanish! Also, share them with all of the couples you know! All of this staying at home with each other... might as well make the best of our time together!
Just in case you didn't know, Leona (my wife) & I offer a class designed for married couples who are really struggling or just need some help with their marriage. The class is not for the faint of heart (hence the name Boot Camp!) and is 12 weeks long meeting once a week with homework throughout. We have been teaching this class for some 12+ years & are finalizing the curriculum for a diocesan based ministry. In the meantime, if you know of any couples who are struggling, please have them call contact me for details.
Well, I believe that is it for now......just a short note to encourage everyone moving forward into the new year that couples are still getting married, & they still need mentor couples to accompany them on the journey!
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." Joshua 1:9
