EDUCATIONAL INSIGHT

The giraffe has a lopsided heart, with their left ventricle being thicker than the right. This is because the left side has to get blood up the giraffe’s long neck to reach their brain. Giraffes also have very high blood pressure so that they can pump the blood to their head. Fortunately, they do not suffer cardiovascular problems that people suffer from having high blood pressure.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:

A meaningful life is not being rich, being popular, being highly educated, or being perfect. It is about being real, being humble, being able to share ourselves and touch the lives of others. - dreamsquote.com

EXCEPTIONAL CAREGIVER SPOTLIGHT

BETTY WALKER!

In December 2021, Home Helpers became richly blessed when Betty Walker walked through its doors. Yes, Betty's kind and loving spirit mirrors the true definition of an extraordinary person, as she inspires meaning in the lives of those that she provides care to. Thank you, Betty!

RECOGNIZING AND HONORING THE

DIVERSITY OF OUR CAREGIVERS

With each newsletter sent to our employees, Home Helpers would like to share a little of the culture, history, and inner beauty of our caregivers. If you would like to teach us about your country, a special hobby or tradition, please let us know. We want to share your story so that we can all learn about your experiences, and we can grow, appreciate, and be united in our mutual goals of respect, kindness, and making the world a better place to live.

I HAVE SOMETHING TO SHARE

HONDURAS

Honduras is a country that is located in Central America. As the above map indicates, its neighbors are Guatemala to the west, El Salvador to the southwest, and Nicaragua to the southeast. Its climate is usually very hot and there is high humidity.

The main sources of economic support come from farming and fishing and tropical storms and hurricanes have been known to cause much destruction and impact its economy. In 1998, according to Encyclopedia Britannica, Hurricane Mitch was the second deadliest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded. More than 11,000 people lost their lives in Honduras and neighboring countries. Millions lost their homes, and there was over 6 billion dollars in property damage.

Caregiver Johanna Ferrera left Honduras and moved to the United States when she was 7 years old. She still misses the warm climate, beautiful beaches, and especially her grandmother, who was like a second mother to her.

Hondurans have a traditional breakfast or lunch of either "Baleadas" or "Pollo Chuco." The Baleadas are flour tortillas with fried beans, scrambled eggs, avocado, cheese, and cream, similar to sour cream.

On her recent trip home to Honduras to visit her grandmother in May 2023, Johanna took the above pictures, including that of "Pollo Chuco." This is made of green bananas cut in slices and fried with either chicken or ground beef added on top, along with salad made with mayonnaise and ketchup and topped with cheese. This meal is consumed for either breakfast or for dinner and is a favorite!
