Spring is in the air!
We are looking forward to finishing up Broadway Park. The park is already packed with children on these nice days. The City will be accepting bids for replacing portions of the sidewalk the children utilize going to and from school as part of the Safe Routes to School grant of 250k that was awarded to the City and the Marseilles Elementary School. We have several other grant applications submitted and we are awaiting announcements.
Additionally with spring coming the beautification committee can always use volunteers to assist with keeping our City looking nice. We currently have a community service worker that will assist with the cleaning of the streets. If you know of anyone that needs to do some community service have them contact Mayor Hollenbeck or Jim Lockwood. If there are any school groups or community organizations that would like to adopt a park, street or some other designated area please contact us.
The City is seeking recently submitted applications for Federal Assistance for Main Street Bridge Replacement and Sanitary Sewer Lining.
Project Description: The City of Marseilles is requesting funding from your office under the Community Project Funding Program to replace the bridge over the Illinois Michigan Canal on Main Street. Recent concrete core samplings revealed the concrete is severely deteriorated. The City anticipates a weight restriction being placed on the bridge once they review the inspection report. This is a heavily travelled street for traffic both cars and semis that come from the interstate through town and over the Illinois River Bridge. A weight restriction will severely impact on the City’s economy with recreation, industry, and our commercial district. The Illinois Michigan Canal is a National Corridor that brings bicycles, hikers, and snow mobiles. There are bicycles for rent for those who wish to travel the corridor. Main Street is also the main artery for guardsmen and equipment to travel to and from the Illinois National Guard Training Center south of the river as well Constellation Nuclear Power Plant and the City’s only bridge over the Illinois River.
Project Description: The City of Marseilles is proposing to complete a $1,026,000.00 sanitary sewer lining project. The proposed project will be to line 2,620 feet of sanitary sewer cured-in-place lining along Illinois and Aurora St to eliminate the risk of sewer collapse, stop inflow and infiltration into the sewer, and stop untreated wastewater from entering the environment. The project includes lining:
• 460 feet of 8" sewer from Chicago St to Liberty St on Illinois St.
• 460 feet of 10" sewer from Liberty St to Water St on Illinois St.
• 1,420 feet of 12" sewer from Water St to Aurora St on Illinois St.
• 280 feet of 18» sewer from Illinois St to Broadway St on Aurora St. And:
• 84 feet of sanitary manholes rehabilitation
• Potential spot sewer repair
• Sewer flow control
• Traffic control
• Activity delivery, Project Area The project area, primarily residential, spans along Illinois St from Chicago St to Aurora St and Aurora St from Illinois St to Broadway Street.
These projects address the federal administration’s commitment to prioritizing equity in rural regions and traditionally underserved communities.
The City is seeking letters of support on these projects. If you wish to prepare a letter you can dop it off at City hall or email it to mayor@Cityofmarseilles.com. Letters should be submitted within the next 10 days as we are under a submission time restraint.
The City will be applying for Round 3 of the Housing Rehabilitation Grants as soon as it opens. This is one of the best programs for our senior citizens, veterans, low to moderate income families to have repair needs, health and safety issues, updating, and many other issues addressed at their residences. In the past we had to designate a certain area, however, that requirement has been lifted so anyone who is qualified and lives in the City may be eligible. So far a total of 11 residences have been rehabilitated with over a million dollars being invested in the community.
Scout Dylan Trettenero will be starting his Eagle Scout Project, a dog park, at the Municipal Boat Launch.
