After a busy summer, autumn will soon be here. Thank you for supporting all the wonderful events this summer. We had record breaking turnout at many of them and also at our visitor center at the Skansie House. A huge thank you to all our busy volunteers that keep the place humming. Also thank you to our partners at Harbor WildWatch!

11th Annual Gig Harbor Film Festival is September 13-16
2018 marks the 11 th Annual Gig Harbor Film Festival, and this year’s fest is stacking up to be the best yet. More than 80 visiting filmmakers from around the world will attend the September event to promote their films, host audience Q&A sessions, and attend public parties at local businesses and homes. Three theaters at the Galaxy Uptown will run over 100 films throughout the weekend in a wide variety of genres, including a family-friendly film block! 

VIP passes to all the films and parties, as well as a variety of customizable à la carte ticket purchase options are available.

Gig Harbor Open Studio Art Tour is September 14, 15 & 16
The Open Studio Tour gives people an opportunity to meet local artists in their studios, to learn what inspires them and how they use their materials and tools to create objects of beauty, whimsy and utility.This year 33 professional artists welcome visitors to their studios.

5th Annual Cider Swig on September 29
Race for A Soldier to Be Held on September 16
Race For A Soldier 10 Miler and 5k will be held on Sunday, September 16, 2018, starting at 7:45 am at the Tom Taylor YMCA. The Permission To Start Dreaming Foundation hosts the event to raise awareness of the challenges faced by military service men and women living with the effects of Post Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain injuries and to support therapy programs services for them.

Citizens Police Academy Accepting Applications
Applications are being accepted for the 2018 Citizens Police Academy through September 7. The Academy provides information in enjoyable and interesting ways on a variety of topics, as well as hands-on experiences and field trips. Classes take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6:30-8:30 pm, from September 18 to October 18, as well as a “hands-on” session Saturday, October 6. To apply and learn more visit the Academy page.
2nd Annual SUP in the Harbor on September 22
Stand Up for Peninsula Schools is proud to announce the 2nd annual SUP in the Harbor, a community event to support our schools. On September 22, hundreds of people will gather in downtown Gig Harbor for stand up paddle boarding, live music, face painting, food and more.

Harbor Hounds on September 8
Harbor Hounds is a Dog-Friendly Community Fair held in downtown Gig Harbor along the waterfront. Registered Dog Walkers walk with their best friend(s) visiting booths, making friends and getting Raffle Cards stamped by the participating sponsors for a chance to win Harbor Hounds prize packages. Food vendors and entertainment are provided throughout the day. 

Clean Up Help Needed for New Park Land on September 22
Help clean up the new community park land located on the corner of Harborview Dr. & Soundview. Meet at the park location from 9 am to Noon on Saturday, September 22. Any volunteer help is appreciated!

Make Waves: 4th Annual Benefit for Environmental Education on September 13
Harbor WildWatch will be hosting their fourth annual benefit, Make Waves: Celebrate, Donate, Educate, on Thursday, September 13 at The Club @ The Boatyard starting at 6 pm. Cost is $75 for Steward Club members and $100 for non-members.

Newly available: Duffy Electric Boat Rentals at Gig Harbor Yachts! They are a great way to cruise around beautiful Gig Harbor and see all the amazing sights and attractions on offer. Gig Harbor Film Festival Presents "Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot" on September 6
The Gig Harbor Film Festival proudly presents " Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot," for the Monthly Movie Night on Wednesday, September 26 at 6:30 pm at the Galaxy Theatre, Uptown Gig Harbor.

Remodeled Judson Street Visitor Center Open for Business
The Judson Street Visitor Center, located on 3125 Judson St., is now open after a recent remodel, to welcome visitors and residents. The Judson Street Visitor Center, along with the Historic Skansie House Visitor & Interpretive Center on 3207 Harborview Dr., comprise Gig Harbor's Visitor Information Centers. Stop in to either center for free info about the greater Gig Harbor Peninsula area!
Call for Art: 2019 Gig Harbor Garden Tour
The Gig Harbor Garden Tour Association invites local artists to submit two-dimensional garden related artwork to be considered for the publicity poster for the 22nd Annual Gig Harbor Garden Tour. The selected artist will not receive a monetary stipend but will benefit from many facets of publicity and exposure of the Tour such as posters, cards, calendar, press releases and program booklet. The selected artist will be able to have a complimentary booth space with the 2019 Garden Tour.

Chamber Open House on September 5
The Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce is hosting an Open House to celebrate renovations completed by Brett Marlo Design Build and Gig Harbor Rotary volunteers on September 5, 2 - 6 pm. You must RSVP to be entered into the raffle drawing at 5:15 pm. More info here.

City Updates

New Park Land Name
Get ready to think of names! In the next month, the City of Gig Harbor will be seeking input from residents on naming the new park land located at the intersection of Harborview Dr. and Soundview Dr. This special park land contains a preserved forest with trees over 100 years old and is home to several blue herons who make their nests among the trees. Acquired by the City in May of 2018, the park land will be given a formal name by recommendation of the Parks Commission and approval of the City Council this fall. Check the City’s website and/or official Facebook page later this month to catch updates on providing suggested names for the Parks Commission to consider. 
Harbor Hill Extension Road is Now Open
Take a drive along the Harbor Hill Extension road and see how it connects the Harbor Hill area to downtown. The Harbor Hill Extension was opened following the August 11 ribbon cutting ceremony. Learn more here.

Active Parks Projects
Ongoing active projects include Donkey Creek Park Improvements and the Eddon Brick House Remodel and upcoming projects include Gig Harbor Sports Complex Master Plan and Crescent Creek Park Visioning. Learn more here.
