Relay for Life Raises Money for Cancer Research & Education
Events being held in El Sobrante, El Cerrito, Pinole

Three Relay for Life American Cancer Society fundraiser events will be held in West Contra Costa County this summer. I hope you will join me in supporting these inspiring community events, either by joining a relay or sponsoring a participant or team.

My mother died of breast cancer the year I was elected to the Board of Supervisors, so I have a personal connection to all of those touched by the disease.

I strongly support the efforts of the American Cancer Society, which funds critical cancer research and education.

Relay for Life is a fun way to help. Teams walk or run for 24 hours around a track or pathway, with team members taking shifts. Teams and/or individuals raise donations from sponsors.

Since it started in 1985, the Relay for Life event has been held in more than 20 countries and has raised more than $40 million.

The theme is to celebrate overcoming the challenges of cancer; remember those who have died, fought or are fighting the disease; and fight back, taking action against cancer.

In my district, relays are being held in El Sobrante, El Cerrito, and Pinole. To get more information including on how to join, form or sponsor a team, check the event's website.(Community links below.) A handy tool lets you put in your zip code for nearby sites. The dates and places (the website has detailed instructions, directions, and contacts) are:

All of these events are held by and for residents throughout all of West County.

I've participated in past relays and can attest to what an inspirational and heartwarming experience they are!
