Happy Birthday U.S. Navy!

On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress established

the naval force that became the United States Navy.

DISTURBING BUT NOT SURPRISING:

FUNDAMENTALIST CHRISTIAN U.S. MILITARY

COMMANDERS GLEEFULLY PROCLAIMING

ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR IS FULFILLING PROPHECY

MRFF has been inundated with complaints about fundamentalist Christian commanders proclaiming that the Israel-Hamas war is fulfilling biblical prophecy. One Air Force commander who was stopped by MRFF's intervention was telling his subordinates:

The “will of the Lord Jesus is manifesting itself

at this very moment in Gaza and Israel.”

“...the war between Israel and Hamas has all been foretold by the Book of Revelation in the Gospel of Jesus Christ

and no-one can do anything about that.”

Just what we need —

U.S. military commanders gleefully

proclaiming the Israel-Hamas war Jesus’ will!

By: MRFF Senior Research Director Chris Rodda

Chris Rodda

No matter what the differing opinions I’ve seen among the community here about the Israel-Hamas war over the past week, I think there is one thing we can all agree on — fundamentalist Christian commanders and NCOs in our military can’t be going around gleefully telling their subordinates or anybody else that the “will of the Lord Jesus is manifesting itself at this very moment in Gaza and Israel.”

Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF) founder and president Mikey Weinstein had no sooner returned from Sunday’s U.S. premiere of “Praying for Armageddon,” a chilling new documentary featuring both Mikey and MRFF Advisory Board member Col. (ret.) Lawrence Wilkerson about the power and influence of U.S. fundamentalist Christians who aim to fulfill the prophecy of a Holy War that will trigger the Second Coming of Christ, than the calls and emails started flooding in to MRFF from service members whose fundamentalist Christian commanders are … well … praying for Armageddon … giddily viewing the carnage of this Israel-Hamas war as the beginning biblical prophecy being fulfilled.

Here’s one such e-mail, from an airman who describes their commander as a “Christianity-Armageddon enthusiast,” and who came to MRFF for help in getting this prophecy-propagating commander’s repulsive comments to stop:

Mr. Weinstein thank you for intervening on our behalf at (name of U.S. military installation withheld) when our (unit commander’s name, rank and title all withheld “reminded” all of us that “...the war between Israel and Hamas has all been foretold by the Book of Revelation in the Gospel of Jesus Christ and no-one can do anything about that.”

I am an active duty USAF enlisted airmen stationed at (name of USAF installation withheld). I am Baptist and my wife is Jewish. We are raising our kids with both.

Earlier this week (name and rank of unit commander withheld) decided to provide his thoughts to us all at a mandatory unit briefing which was supposed to be focusing on “Maintaining Air Force Performance Standards” as it was explained a few days before by our First Sergeant.

He started out normally but then abruptly stopped and decided to tell our whole unit as I said above that the “will of the Lord Jesus is manifesting itself at this very moment in Gaza and Israel.” I tried to look around and others were also as shocked as I was. Our commander then went on about how violent and bloody the Battle of Armageddon would look like and that all “true Christians” sleep well at night knowing that “this carnage all has the will and the purpose of Jesus behind it.” I’m a Christian too and I get it but at our MANDATORY quarterly unit “Air Force Performance Standards” briefing? Where many Airmen who are not even Christians have no choice as to whether to attend or not? And those few Jewish members had to listen to this too? YGBSM?

Our First Shirt was just all smiles as he is as much a pusher of Christianity in our military workplace as our commander always is. This is not at all the first time. And nobody can do anything to stop him it seems?

After this briefing and later that afternoon 8 of us who were truly pissed decided to reach out to the MRFF. This latest “sermon’ had been their last straw. I called Mikey Weinstein and he answered his own phone. Mikey asked for some contact info on our upper chain of command. Of our group's number of 8 airmen 6 of us were Christian like me and one was Jewish and the other Airman said she practiced no faith.

So OK, Just this morning we had an unscheduled meeting with our unit commander. He apologized, kind of, for his statements of the other day and said he’d “…just gotten a little carried away with current events.” He told us it won’t happen again and if it does we should "just come to me with our complaints rather than going with an outside NGO like the MFFR” (he got your acronym wrong too). Like we’d EVER just go to him instead of the MRFF. He would just destroy us.

How easy for him to say! Not so easy for any of us under his command to tell the emperor he has no clothes on especially when it come to his own Christian religion. We don’t know what if anything more will happen with our commander but we are all very grateful to Mikey Weinstein and the MRFF for taking our case and apparently getting our “Christianity-Armageddon enthusiast” commander called onto the carpet. Finally!

(MRFF summary of review)

Variety’s review of ‘Praying For Armageddon’ describes the documentary, which features Mikey Weinstein and MRFF Advisory Board Member Larry Wilkerson, as “unnerving,” “persuasive and increasingly alarming,”

calling the film’s “core thesis” that American Christian fundamentalists are “actively working to bring about the end of the world as we know it” “abundantly, horribly clear.” The review ends by calling the film a “compelling, sobering” revelation that “the hitherto unimagined scale of a type of political insanity that would entrust the future to people who don’t want there to be a future at all.”

(MRFF summary of review)

Deadline notes that “Praying For Armageddon” makes the case that fundamentalist evangelical Christian leaders such as John Hagee of Christians United for Israel (CUFI) who seek to bring on the end times not only “watch for indications of the coming apocalypse, but more than that, they are influencing policy decisions that will hasten the fulfillment of what they see as prophesy,” pointing out that this in no longer just a fringe movement but that “apocalyptic ideology has received a warm embrace from many conservatives in Congress.” The review quotes MRFF Advisory Board Member Larry Wilkerson, who appears in the film, explaining that “evangelical fundamentalist chaplains go to some place where basic training graduates and they say beforehand… ‘These troops are at their most vulnerable. They’ve been wracked and trained to death. Go get ‘em,’” and saying of mass baptisms held at the end of Basic Training, “And they proselytize and get them, take them down and baptize them and then they’re part of the Christian nationalists.”

'Praying for Armageddon' exposes the power, influence of U.S. fundamentalist evangelicals

(MRFF summary of review)

Yahoo! News describes “Praying For Armageddon” as a “political thriller” that “exposes the influence of U.S. fundamentalist evangelicals on politics and democracy, with the aim to fulfill the biblical Armageddon prophecy.” The review quotes filmmaker Tonje Hessen Schei saying of the film’s exposure of the fundamentalist Christians’ strategic infiltration of the military, “… seeing how they are taking over or positioning themselves in the U.S. military as well. Where they are recruiting soldiers and having these baptizing ceremonies at the end of their training. All of a sudden you have all these Christian nationalists that are part of the military, the U.S. military.”
