Latest Update on Emergency Rental Assistance Alabama
AHFA has been working diligently to get emergency rental and utility assistance to those in need through Emergency Rental Assistance(ERA) Alabama. Each week, the number of applications funded and dollar amount allocated to applications increases over the previous period. As of September 30, more than 3,300 applicants have received assistance totaling just over $21.8 million.

In addition, we continue to see progress with the Imminent Eviction Prevention Initiative. AHFA established this partnership with Legal Services Alabama to expedite eviction cases for renter households who have submitted a rental assistance application with ERA Alabama, have been served a formal eviction notice or court case filing, and are eligible to remain in their existing households based on the landlord’s separate ERA Alabama application and agreement. So far, we have assisted 170 renters through this initiative, with another 45 cases pending.

We expect the rate of disbursement to accelerate even more following the Department of Treasury’s recent guidance easing applicant documentation requirements, all of which we immediately implemented. We were one of the first in the nation to set up a statewide program from scratch, and we’ve accomplished much in a short amount of time. Still, we know many are facing the very real possibility of eviction or utility disconnects due to financial hardships caused by the pandemic. We are committed to providing this vital emergency rental assistance to eligible Alabamians as quickly as possible while also adhering to Treasury’s program guidelines and requirements.
