Hillman Innovations in Care Program:
2021 Focus on Racism and Health
Applications Due: March 30, 2021, 11:59 pm

The Hillman Innovations in Care (HIC) Program was established in 2014 to advance innovative, nursing-driven models of care that target the health and healthcare needs of groups and communities who have historically struggled against oppression, discrimination and indifference. These populations include Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC), the economically disadvantaged, LGBTQ+ people, people experiencing homelessness, low-income rural populations, and others.

This year the HIC program is issuing a special call for submissions that address racism and its impact on health. Racism has been, and remains, the root cause of serious health inequities that unjustly affect communities of color. These disparities include increased risk for diabetes, heart disease, obesity and mental illness; inequitable access to high quality care; inordinately negative outcomes such as infant and maternal mortality rates for Black mothers and babies that are twice as high as those for white populations, and life expectancy that can be as much as ten years shorter than white counterparts living a short drive away.

The disproportionate harm of the COVID-19 pandemic in Black, Indigenous and other communities of color and police killings as part of a long history of police brutality are other manifestations of structural racism and societal inequities. Addressing and dismantling racism in its myriad forms—structural, interpersonal, and institutional—is a critical and constructive approach to advancing health equity and improving population health.

The program will award two (2) grants of up to $600,000 each, distributed over a 36-month period. Projects are expected to begin January 1, 2022, and end December 31, 2024.
NIH Notice of Special Interest (NOSI)
NIDCR Support for Research on Physiological Involvement of Oral Cavity in Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) - NOT-DE-21-001
The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) is issuing this Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) to encourage research studies focused on the physiological involvement of oral cavity and oral manifestations related to SARS-CoV-2 and/or Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).
NIA Aging-Relevant Behavioral and Social Research on Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)
NOT-AG-21-015

NIA is issuing this Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) to highlight the continuing need for behavioral, psychological, social, and economic research on SARS-CoV-2 and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). There is a need for ongoing research on the longer-term effects of COVID-19 on the health and well-being of those infected, those caring for the sick, and many others whose lives were disrupted by the pandemic and its associated mitigation and prevention strategies.
NIDA Effects of Smoking and Vaping on the Risk and Outcome of COVID-19 Infection - NOT-DA-21-011

NIDA is interested in receiving research applications focusing on individuals who smoke or vape either marijuana and/or tobacco to determine: 1) the risk of contracting a COVID-19 infection, 2) the effects on asymptomatic COVID-19 infected persons, and 3) the course of the COVID-19 infection.
Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP)
Applications Due:
February 28, 2021, 11:59 pm
The UROP Program is INBRE's flagship undergraduate research program where junior and senior level students work on an independent research project for 10 weeks over the summer. This program provides student recipients with an award of $6,000 as a summer student worker, and each mentor receives $600 to defray the cost of lab supplies. Because all recipients will be immersed in time-intensive research, participants are not allowed to be engaged in other course work or employment during the 10 week research period.
Program Guidelines: Research projects will begin in early June and include 10-week, full-time, independent research. The mentor must be present during the entire program or the student may become ineligible. Students are required to attend an orientation which includes a required laboratory safety class. Students are required to attend a series of seminars and workshops focused on assisting students planning to pursuing biomedical research careers. All students will present their research project at an undergraduate poster session and the NV INBRE Statewide Annual Meeting in August.

Eligibility: Students must meet all of the following eligibility requirements:
U.S. citizens or have a valid employment authorization document (EAD) permitting you to work in the U.S. (DACA students are eligible). Continuing student enrolled in Fall 2020 classes. You are not eligible if graduating in Spring or Summer 2021. 3.0 minimum GPA. Undergraduates enrolled at NSHE institutions. Priority is given to underrepresented/educationally disadvantaged students. Preference will be given to applicants who have not received an INBRE UROP award in the past.
Applications Due:
March 5, 2021, 5:00 pm
The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) is now accepting applications for the Summer 2021 Undergraduate Research Opportunity (UROP) scholarship program to promote undergraduate research in all NSHE institutions.

Focus: The UROP program promotes intensive undergraduate research opportunities for university students. Through these research experiences, our goal is to enhance the recruitment and retention of undergraduates in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) disciplines, particularly those related to solar energy and its effects on water resources and the environment in general.

Eligibility: Undergraduate students enrolled full time (1-3 credits for summer) at any NSHE institution during the time they are conducting their research. Scholar must have a NSHE faculty mentor to supervise their research project. Past recipients of a NSF-EPSCoR undergraduate research scholarship under the current NEXUS award are not eligible to apply.

Scholarship Amount: $4,000 for students

Research Period: June 1, 2021 – August 10, 2021
