Microbial Pathogenesis in Alzheimer's Disease
IDSA Foundation is accepting applications for 2023 funding cycle for the Microbial Pathogenesis in Alzheimer's Disease grant. $30,000 - $250,000. PhDs and MDs are encouraged to apply. Interdisciplinary research is encouraged, including collaborations between experts in Alzheimer's research and infectious diseases. Begin your application.

Intriguing evidence suggests Alzheimer’s disease may have a link to infectious diseases or a microbial mechanism. Could this be the missing link to lead to a cure for Alzheimer’s disease?

To advance research that could shed light and provide hope to the more than 5.7 million Americans and 47 million people worldwide living with the disease, the IDSA Foundation established the Alzheimer’s Research Grant, now known as the Microbial Pathogenesis in Alzheimer’s Disease Grant, in 2018 to foster further investigation. These grants support research that suggests an infectious agent or microbial community is correlated to Alzheimer’s disease and promotes novel research in the field of microbial triggers for Alzheimer’s disease.

NSF CAREER
NSF Faculty Early Career Development Program (CAREER), NSF 22-586 ~$250,000/yr. Proposal Deadline: 07/26/2023

CAREER: The Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program is a Foundation-wide activity that offers the National Science Foundation's most prestigious awards in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as academic role models in research and education and to lead advances in the mission of their department or organization. Activities pursued by early-career faculty should build a firm foundation for a lifetime of leadership in integrating education and research. NSF encourages submission of CAREER proposals from early-career faculty at all CAREER-eligible organizations and especially encourages women, members of underrepresented minority groups, and persons with disabilities to apply.

PECASE: Each year NSF selects nominees for the Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from among the most meritorious recent CAREER awardees. Selection for this award is based on three important criteria: The criteria are 1) performance of innovative research at the frontiers of science, engineering, and technology that is relevant to the mission of the sponsoring organization or agency, 2) community service demonstrated through scientific leadership, education or community outreach, and 3) commitment to STEM equity, diversity, accessibility, and/or inclusion. These awards foster innovative developments in science and technology, increase awareness of careers in science and engineering, give recognition to the scientific missions of the participating agencies, enhance connections between fundamental research and national goals, and highlight the importance of science and technology for the Nation’s future. Individuals cannot apply for PECASE. These awards are initiated by the participating federal agencies. At NSF, up to twenty-six nominees for this award are selected each year from among the PECASE-eligible CAREER awardees most likely to become the leaders of academic research and education in the twenty-first century. The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy makes the final selection and announcement of the awardees.

NSF EAGER
NSF EArly-concept Grants for Exploratory Research (EAGER) Proposal Up to $300,000 and up to two years in duration.

The EAGER funding mechanism supports exploratory work in early stages on untested but potentially transformative research ideas or approaches that are considered “high risk/high reward.” Note that EAGER proposals are reviewed internally, which allows for shorter time between proposal submission and available funding.

EAGER is a type of proposal used to support exploratory work in its early stages on untested, but potentially transformative, research ideas or approaches. This work may be considered especially "high risk-high payoff" in the sense that it, for example, involves radically different approaches, applies new expertise, or engages novel disciplinary or interdisciplinary perspectives. These exploratory proposals also may be submitted directly to an NSF program, but the EAGER proposal type should not be used for projects that are appropriate for submission as "regular" (i.e., non-EAGER) NSF proposals. PI(s) must contact the NSF Program Officer(s) whose expertise is most germane to the proposal topic prior to submission of an EAGER proposal. This will aid in determining the appropriateness of the work for consideration under the EAGER proposal type; this suitability must be assessed early in the process.

EAGER proposals are NOT:
  • for projects that are appropriate for submission as "regular" NSF proposals;
  • for planning grants;
  • to support the collection of preliminary data; or
  • to provide services to NSF.
NSF RAPID
NSF Rapid Response Research (RAPID) Proposal Up to $200,000 and up to one year in duration.

The RAPID funding mechanism is for research that involves urgent data collection, such as for quick-response research to natural disasters. Note that RAPID proposals are reviewed internally, which allows for shorter time between proposal submission and available funding.

RAPID is a type of proposal used when there is a severe urgency with regard to availability of, or access to, data, facilities or specialized equipment, including quick-response research on natural or anthropogenic disasters and similar unanticipated events. PI(s) must contact the NSF Program Officer(s) whose expertise is most germane to the proposal topic before submitting a RAPID proposal. This will facilitate determining whether the proposed work is appropriate for RAPID funding.
