The NIH Research With Activities Related to Diversity (ReWARD) Program's overarching goal is to enhance the breadth and geographical location of research and research-related activities supported by NIH. The ReWARD program provides support for the health-related research of scientists who are making a significant contribution to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) and who have no current NIH research project grant funding. The ReWARD program provides funding for both the scientific research and the DEIA activities of investigators. The grant will support scientific research in areas related to the programmatic interests of one or more of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) and ongoing DEIA activities focused on enhancing diversity in the biomedical research enterprise within the United States and territories.

NIH Director's New Innovator Award

The New Innovator Award supports exceptionally creative early career scientists proposing unusually innovative and high-impact projects. The New Innovator Award has the following characteristics:

  • Single-PI applications only
  • PI must have Early Stage Investigator status
  • No preliminary data required
  • $1.5 million in direct costs disbursed in two multi-year-funded segments of three-years and two-years
  • PHS 2590 Non-Competing Continuation Progress Report (not a Multi-Year Funded Research Performance Progress Report (RPPR)) must be submitted in year three for funding the second award segment
  • Detailed Budget pages must be completed according to the special instructions in the funding opportunity announcement
  • Applications due August 18, 2023

NIH Director's Transformative Research Award

The Transformative Research Award supports individuals or teams proposing unusually innovative research projects that are inherently risky and untested but have the potential to create or overturn fundamental paradigms. The Transformative Research Award has the following characteristics:

  • Open to all career stages
  • Accepts single-PI or multi-PI applications
  • No preliminary data or detailed experimental plan required
  • Anonymized Specific Aims page and Research Strategy section
  • Flexible budget
  • Application deadline: September 1, 2023

The Transformative Research Award initiative is piloting an anonymized review process. Applicants should carefully read and follow the instructions in the funding opportunity to ensure responsiveness.

NIMH Neurological Effects of COVID-19
NIMH Understanding Neurological Effects of COVID-19 and Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 Infection, RFA-NSF-23-021. CFDA #s 93.242, 93.853, and 93.866. Up to $500,000 per year. Maximum project period is 5 years. Application Deadline: 06/02/2023 and 02/02/2024.

The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to invite applications
focused on the neurological and neuropsychiatric manifestations of COVID-19 (neuro-COVID) and Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 Infection (neuro-PASC) and on the effect of COVID-19 on pre-infection neurologic conditions.

Applications investigating the pathophysiology and mechanisms of neuro-COVID and neuro-PASC and neurologically-focused human subjects research, as well as those proposing studies of scientifically compelling pathways to prevent the development of neuro-PASC or to accelerate the development of effective treatments for PASC-related neurological complications are of particular interest for this NOFO.
