NSF’s Convergence Accelerator releases 2022 Portfolio Guide
Featuring 45+ use-inspired research projects across 6 convergence research tracks
The U.S. National Science Foundation's Convergence Accelerator released its comprehensive 2022 Portfolio Guide, showcasing novel, use-inspired solutions from more than 45 NSF-funded multidisciplinary teams across six distinct convergence research track topics.
"NSF's Convergence Accelerator is a unique and fast-growing initiative that fosters multidisciplinary collaboration between diverse groups of talented researchers and experts," said Erwin Gianchandani, NSF assistant director for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships. "In this way, the Convergence Accelerator furthers the mission of NSF's new Technology, Innovation and Partnerships Directorate, which aims to accelerate breakthrough technologies and solutions that address national-scale societal and economic challenges. We are excited to share this guide that illustrates the variety of ways NSF-funded Convergence Accelerator teams are developing impactful solutions that do just that."
Yearly, the program releases a solicitation featuring multiple convergence research topics. Convergence research topics are called "tracks" and funded teams within the tracks make up a cohort. All teams within a cohort begin in Convergence Research Phase 1.
The 2022 Portfolio Guide highlights projects from Phase 2 teams funded in the 2019 and 2020 cohorts and Phase 1 teams from the 2021 cohort. Each project features a detailed executive summary with information about the solution, it's differentiators, current roadmap and partners.
The Convergence Accelerator track topics include:
- Track A: Open Knowledge Networks
- Track B: AI & the Future of Work
- Track C: Quantum Technology
- Track D: AI-Driven Data Sharing & Modeling
- Track E: Networked Blue Economy
- Track F: Trust & Authenticity in Communication Systems

Up to $10,000,000 is expected to be available for Elements awards, up to $20,000,000 is expected to be available for Framework Implementations awards, and up to $4,000,000 is expected to be available for the Transition to Sustainability awards, all subject to the availability of funds. The Cyberinfrastructure for Sustained Scientific Innovation (CSSI) program seeks to enable funding opportunities that are flexible and responsive to the evolving and emerging needs in cyberinfrastructure (CI). The program continues to emphasize integrated CI services, quantitative metrics with targets for delivery and usage of these services, and community creation.
The CSSI program anticipates three classes of awards:
- Elements: These awards target small groups that will create and deploy robust services for which there is a demonstrated need, and that will advance one or more significant areas of science and engineering.
- Framework Implementations: These awards target larger, interdisciplinary teams organized around the development and application of services aimed at solving common research problems faced by NSF researchers in one or more areas of science and engineering, and resulting in a sustainable community framework providing CI services to a diverse community or communities.
- Transition to Sustainability: These awards target groups who would like to execute a well-defined sustainability plan for existing CI with demonstrated impact in one or more areas of science and engineering supported by NSF. The sustainability plan should enable new avenues of support for the long-term sustained impact of the CI.
NSF support for projects funded via CSSI Elements and Frameworks awards, or its predecessor programs, is intended to be of finite duration, limited to no more than 10 years. If appropriate for transition to sustainability, teams may request further one-time support through the “Transition to Sustainability” class of awards.

Pfizer Global Medical Grants - Rapid Education on COVID-19 Outpatient Treatment - Applications due October 27, 2022 - Specific Area of Interest: Through this RFP it is our intent to support rapidly developed and deployed educational programs that address knowledge gaps in the identification and treatment of COVID-19 and are designed to help achieve the following goals:
- Increase understanding of the need for early diagnosis and intervention for patients at high risk for progression to severe COVID-19
- Increase awareness of national COVID-19 treatment guidelines (e.g., NIH, IDSA, etc.) for COVID-19 in non-hospitalized patients at high risk of progression to severe illness
