NSF Alan T. Waterman Award |
|
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is pleased to accept nominations for the 2023 Alan T. Waterman Award. Established in 1975 to commemorate the Foundation's first Director, the Waterman Award is NSF's highest honor for promising, early-career researchers.
Nominees are accepted from any field of science and engineering that NSF supports. The award recipient will receive a medal and an invitation to a formal awards ceremony. In addition, the recipient will receive a grant of $1,000,000 to use over a five-year period for scientific research or advanced study in any field of science or engineering supported by the NSF, at the institution of the recipient's choice. NSF encourages nominations for individuals from a range of institution types and that reflect the rich demographic and geographic diversity of the U.S.
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
- A candidate must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. They must be 40 years of age or younger, or not more than 10 years beyond receipt of the Ph.D. degree, by December 31 of the year in which they are nominated.
- A candidate should have demonstrated exceptional individual achievement in scientific or engineering research of sufficient quality, originality, innovation, and significant impact on the field so as to situate themselves as a leader among peers.
Complete nomination packages, consisting of nominations and four letters of reference, are due by September 16, 2022.

DOE Office of Science Visiting Faculty Program |
|
Applications are currently being accepted for the Spring 2023 term of the DOE Office of Science’s Visiting Faculty Program (VFP). As part of Office of Science’s RENEW initiative, the program is expanding to offer extended opportunities for faculty to engage in research and build collaborations at the National Laboratories. This opportunity will strengthen partnerships between DOE national laboratories and two-year colleges, minority-serving institutions (MSIs), and other colleges and universities nationwide. VFP seeks to increase the research competitiveness of faculty members and their students at institutions historically underrepresented in STEM to expand the workforce vital to DOE mission areas. As such, VFP especially attracts faculty members from MSIs, including Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Typically, about 50% of the participants are from MSIs, one-third of which are HBCUs. Selected college and university faculty members collaborate with DOE laboratory scientific research staff on research projects of mutual interest. Each participating faculty member may invite one or two students (one of whom may be a graduate student) to join the research team during a summer term. The program will focus on faculty only in non-summer terms.

DOE Office of Science Undergrad Internships |

Applications are currently being accepted for the Spring 2023 term of two undergraduate internship programs offered by the DOE Office of Science: the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) program and the Community College Internships (CCI) program. Through SULI and CCI, undergraduate students discover science and technology careers at the DOE National Laboratories and gain the experience needed to transition from intern to employment. Interns work directly with National Laboratory scientists and engineers, assisting them on research or technology projects that support the DOE mission. SULI is open to full-time students attending 4-year institutions and community colleges or recent graduates within two years of receiving their bachelor’s degree. CCI is exclusively for community college students. Both programs are stipend-based and offered three times annually in Fall, Spring, and Summer terms.
