Funding Fridays is the title of a bi-monthly newsletter aimed at amplifying and consolidating external funding opportunities shared with the faculty through various channels. This newsletter will highlight and foster funding opportunities that offer cross-unit, multidisciplinary, or unique collaborative opportunities. It will also highlight all limited-institution submissions or opportunities that are high risk / high reward. The Office for Proposal Enhancement at the University of Georgia invites you to participate in an NIH MIRA (R35) Established Investigator webinar and Q&A presented by Dr. Zhongzhen Nie, branch chief of the Pharmacological and Physiological Sciences (PPS) Branch in the Division of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biological Chemistry.

The goal of MIRA for Established Investigators (PAR-19-367) is to increase the efficiency of NIGMS funding by providing investigators with greater stability and flexibility, thereby enhancing scientific productivity and the chances for important breakthroughs. In this talk, Dr. Nie will review application requirements, offer guidance to craft strong applications, and answer questions about the program.

All regular, full-time Emory faculty, of all ranks, are welcome to apply. URC eligibility follows criteria for “full-time faculty” as defined within each school. Postdocs, Fellows, Adjuncts, Research Track lines in some schools, and part-time faculty are not eligible.

Winship K12 Clinical Oncology Career Development Program

Selected scholars will have full-time appointments and will receive 75% protected time for research, formal mentored training in clinical cancer research, up to $100,000 per year (up to two years) to support salary and benefits, and up to $30,000 per year (up to two years) for other research/training related expenses.
Potential applicants must first indicate an intent to apply to the K12 training program by completing and submitting the K12 Letter of Intent (LOI) (found at the hyperlinked text). The letter of intent should be emailed as a single pdf document to K12OncologyScholars@emory.edu no later than 11:59 pm on Monday 11/1/2021. 2022 Simons Early Career Investigator in Marine Microbial Ecology and Evolution Awards

The purpose of these awards is to help launch the careers of outstanding investigators in the field of marine microbial ecology and evolution who will advance our understanding through experiments, modeling or theory. Investigators must be currently active in research on microbial ecology and/or evolution, excluding research focusing on the microbiomes of animals or plants. Doris Duke Charitable Foundation Invites Proposals for 2022 Clinical Scientist Development Award
Deadline: November 12, 2021
The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has issued a request for applications for its 2022 Clinical Scientist Development Award, which will provide approximately seventeen grants of up to $495,000 over three years ($150,000 direct cost and $15,000 in direct costs per year) to early-career physician-scientists (MD, MD/PhD, DO, or foreign equivalent degree) in support of major clinical research and enable them to transition to independent research funding.

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation - Health Policy Fellows: Preliminary Application Due November 12, 2021
The RWJF Health Policy Fellows program provides the nation’s most comprehensive learning experience at the nexus of health, science, and policy in Washington, D.C
Up to six awards of up to $165,000 each will be made in 2022. During the first 12 months of the fellowship, a stipend of up to $104,000 (not to exceed the fellow’s salary prior to entering the program) in fellowship funds may be requested.

National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Division of Research Programs - Collaborative Research:

The Collaborative Research program aims to advance humanistic knowledge through collaboration between two or more scholars. The program encourages projects that propose diverse approaches to topics, incorporate multiple points of view, explore new avenues of inquiry in the humanities, and lead to manuscripts for print publications or scholarly digital grant products. Projects that include partnerships with researchers from the natural and social sciences are encouraged but must propose a humanistic research agenda.

Occupational Safety and Health Training Project Grants [T03]

NIOSH / CDC invites grant applications for Training Project Grants (TPGs) that are focused on occupational safety and health training. NIOSH is mandated to provide an adequate supply of qualified personnel to carry out the purposes of the Occupational Safety and Health Act. NIOSH-supported Education and Research Centers (ERCs) and TPGs are how NIOSH meets this mandate. The majority of TPGs are in academic institutions and provide high-quality undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate training in a variety of occupational safety and health (OSH) and allied disciplines. NIOSH also funds non-academic TPGs to meet specific training needs of targeted populations including firefighters, commercial fishermen, and OSH interns.

NSF Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI) Instrument Acquisition or Development

The Major Research Instrumentation (MRI) Program serves to increase access to multi-user scientific and engineering instrumentation for research and research training in our Nation's institutions of higher education and not-for-profit scientific/engineering research organizations. MRI provides support to acquire critical research instrumentation without which advances in fundamental science and engineering research may not otherwise occur. MRI also provides support to develop next-generation research instruments that open new opportunities to advance the frontiers in science and engineering research. Pediatric Obesity Discovery Science Research to Improve Understanding of Risk and Causal Mechanisms for Obesity in Early Life

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support innovative, discovery research studies to better characterize early-life risk factors and elucidate underlying causal mechanisms through which these risk factors contribute to the development of obesity during infancy and early childhood. Studies should aim to understand biological mechanisms that mediate behavioral and/or metabolic risk for obesity development in young children and how risk may be modified by other contributors such as psychosocial, contextual, and/or environmental factors. This FOA encourages multidisciplinary teams of scientists including, but not limited to those with expertise in basic, translational, clinical, and behavioral research.
