What are Home Modifications?

Home modifications are adaptations to the living environment intended to increase ease of use, safety, security, and independence. Modifications can include:

  • Changes or additions to the structure (e.g., widening doorways, adding a first-floor bathroom or a ramp)
  • Installing special equipment (e.g., grab bars and handrails)
  • Adjusting the location of items (e.g., moving furniture)
  • Smart home technology, monitoring, and wayfinding supports

Ways to Pay for Home Modifications

The Assistive Technology Financial Loan Program helps Maryland residents with disabilities and their families qualify for lower-interest loans to buy equipment that will help them live, work, and learn more independently.

The ATLP can provide loans up to $20,000 for Home Modifications, including funding doorway widening, adapted bathrooms, ramps, stairlifts, and much more. To learn more about the loan program and eligibility, visit the AT Loan Program online.
