Making an Impact in Environmental Education
|
|
In honor of Earth Month, PVF would like to introduce five of our Designated Funds you may be unaware of. Each of these programs are making a big impact in environmental education for Bay Area students.

Forest & Tree was founded by Oakland principal Jeffrey Embleton to provide young people in grades TK-12 with outdoor learning experiences away from the four walls of a traditional classroom in order to develop a stronger sense of self, community and connection with the natural world. In Jeff's words, “we collaborate with educators to ideate and create meaningful learning experiences-- with experiences in outdoor learning, project based learning, expeditions, advisory, restorative practices and more. We work with you to design toward your wildest aspirations.”

IDEAL stands for Integrated Design for Education, Art and Leadership and was founded by Joelle Fraser & Trena Noval to foster innovative teaching and learning through creative arts-based practice that cultivates liberatory learning spaces. Our Changing Planet is one of their programs that supports teachers, students, and their communities to understand the value of their local ecosystems, and points them towards their ability to creatively develop solutions that can collaboratively strengthen their community’s climate resilience. At the core of this program are the visual and performing arts that serve as creative hands-on, minds-on experiences for engaging teachers and their students to become their community voice for collective solutions.

Plastic Free Fridays, originally founded by Sierra Quitiquit, is here to reduce the use of single-use plastic by raising awareness and shaping positive habits to benefit everyone. They want to educate and inspire communities to break free from using unnecessary and harmful plastics, and work towards a systemic change on a corporate and policy level, too.

Sustainable Future Outdoor Academy teaches middle and high school students about sustainability in a fun, outdoor camp environment. Founded by Scott Harmon, their mission is to show young people how to lead sustainable lives and influence their families, schools and communities to do the same by making learning about sustainability and environmentalism engaging through educational modules with hands-on activities, field trips to local sustainable farms and hikes exploring local natural destinations.

Agency by Design Oakland offers a path to use maker-centered learning to support equity, student success, critical thinking, joyful school culture, and a shift to learner-driven practice in Oakland schools.
