Dog Days of Summer Adoption Promo Update

Our Dog Days of Summer adoption event was a huge success! Every single available dog at the Humane Society was adopted!!! That's right, in just three days, 33 dogs and puppies and found wonderful new families! And that included Ralphie, who had been waiting for his new home for 94 days!! Thank you to all the adopters who waited patiently to give a furry friend a home, to our hard working staff and volunteers who barely stopped to breathe for three days, and of course to our community, whose support made this Dog Days of Summer adoption event possible.

Waiving or reducing adoption fees was successful to help these pups find homes, but this event cost thousands of dollars to make possible. Can you give to offset those fees and help us continue to be there for dogs in need?

With the generous support of the Gordie Howe International Bridge Community Benefits Plan, the Humane Society is able to assist residents of Sandwich with spaying or neutering community cats. “Community cats” are cats who live outdoors in the community and are cared for by one or more people who feed them and who may provide some form of shelter. 

Verified by valid identification, residents with approved postal codes may bring in community cats for spay or neuter surgery at no charge. To qualify, residents should live within the region bordered by the Detroit River, Huron Church, Ojibway Parkway, and EC Row.

All community cats that benefit from this grant will receive a mandatory ear tip (to easily identify them as altered), a microchip, a topical parasite treatment, and vaccinations. A total of 200 surgeries will be offered under this program.

To apply, please fill out the application at the link below. Your application will be reviewed within one week and if approved you will be contacted to book surgery dates. 

In this sweltering summer weather, even a few minutes in a hot vehicle can be deadly! Although many pets enjoy being a co-pilot, it would be best to leave your furry friends at home if you have errands to run.

In 2020, the government took over animal welfare investigations, limiting the authority to rescue a pet from a hot vehicle to police, fire, or a government animal welfare inspector. If you are concerned about a pet in an unattended hot vehicle, this is an emergency that requires a call to 911. For non-urgent animal welfare concerns, please make a report to the Provincial Animal Welfare Service by calling 1-833-9ANIMAL (1-833-926-4625).

The Humane Society's Putt for Paws annual golf tournament takes place September 22, 2023. Eighteen holes at Sutton Creek Golf Course, a BBQ lunch, beverages, and the chance to meet some adorable furry friends on the course - it's the best golf fundraiser out there!
