The Windsor/Essex County Humane Society is nearing capacity for dogs. In the first half of 2023, surrendered dog intake increased by 62% and stray dog intake increased by 42%, placing a strain on available kennel space. To help a number of dogs find homes, we’ll be hosting our biggest dog adoption promo of the year on July 6-8, 2023! ALL dogs who have been available for adoption for more than 30 days, who are over 100lbs, and over 4 years of age will be FREE, and all other dogs will have their adoption fees reduced by 50%! Historically, animal welfare organizations worried that when adoption fees are reduced adopters may not feel the same attachment to their adopted animal. However, extensive experience with these events in the US and scientific research has proven that concern unfounded.

This special dog adoption event will take place on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, June 6-8 from 1:30-6pm each day at the Humane Society. For the duration of this event all dog adoption applications will be accepted in person only. Online applications will be paused for dogs, but will still be available for cats and small animals.

Even at these steeply discounted adoption rates all dog adoptions come with the usual great package - spay/neuter surgery, microchip, age appropriate vaccines, heartworm test, parasite treatment, and two sessions with our behaviour team.

Does your dog look like this one when they see people or other dogs? The WECHS behaviour team wants to help! Come join us for an information seminar on dog reactivity on Thursday, July 13

This session is for humans only, but is a prerequisite to register for upcoming interactive classes with your dog. Those will be small size classes that will help set your dog up for success. They will run for 4 weeks at a cost of $50 for the series, but you're also welcome to just attend this seminar and work on the tips at home.

The customer service area of the Humane Society will look a lot different in coming months. Denise has been part of the Humane Society team for 37 years and Jackie for 27 years, and both of them started their well-deserved retirements last month! If you see them around please be sure to thank them for their years of service to our community's animals, and wish them a very relaxing retirement.

Dog enrichment is our most popular volunteer program, and we're currently accepting applications! Volunteers should be comfortable handling energetic dogs of all sizes, and be willing to commit to one year of volunteer service. Volunteers provide enrichment to our deserving shelter dogs and help to prepare them to find their new family by supporting their behaviour training and socialization. Please note that the shifts currently open are on weekdays, so we are seeking applications from volunteers with weekday availability.

When people find baby kittens, they often panic and assume that the kittens need help, sometimes causing more harm than good. But the kind woman who found tiny Coppertone Baby didn't. She carefully assessed the situation, and called the Humane Society for advice. Based on the information she provided, it was clear that he needed some additional support that WECHS could offer so she gladly brought him in to us. Now, he's warm and cozy in the care of one of our best bottle baby foster mums!

If you find young kittens, please be sure they really need help before trying to help!
