September marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage month.
Rosh-Hashanah , the Jewish New Year celebration is also celebrated during this month.


During the month of October we celebrate National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
We also celebrate LGBT History Month , where we recognize lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history and the history of gay rights movements.

September marks the beginning of our outreach program, Health Careers Academy (HCA) for the school year. The outreach mentors help foster and encourage high school students who may want to pursue a career in the health professions.

Aspirations in Medical Professions (AMP)

About 60 young minds from Westfield High School and Hartman Middle School visited McGovern Medical School. They learned the different steps they needed to take to achieve their dreams of becoming a nurse, dentist and/or physician. They had hands-on activities where they had the opportunity to learn how to intubate a mannequin with the direction of faculty members from the Department of Anesthesiology! The students were joined during their lunch time by some of our medical students. Stories of encouragement were heard by our visiting students .
Welcoming our First Year
SNMA and LMSA Students

This year over 100 students from Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA), faculty, and community physicians joined the ODI in welcoming the first year medical students at Dr. LaTanya Love's and Pedro Mancias' residence. This annual event is held to provide an opportunity and space for students to mingle, form mentorships, network and meet their peers. The first year medical students asked advice from their fellow classmates and enjoyed an evening forming connections.

Born and raised in Houston, Dr. Johnson found her love for research at UTHealth while working in the Children's Learning Institute. Learn her story and her pursuit to be an agent of change.

From a very young age Dr. Zamora knew that medicine was in her future. Her role models not only inspired her to become a physician, they were her support system and admiration for her career.
