February is Black History Month

We celebrated National Women's Physician Day on February 3rd.

Lunar Year, one of the most sacred traditions in the Chinese cultures is celebrated TODAY , February 5th. We welcome the year of the pig!

March is Women's History Month
“A woman is like a tea bag — you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.” Eleanor Roosevelt

We also observe Deaf History Month throughout most of the month of March and April.

Mardi Gras , is a Carnival celebration which reflects the practice of the last night of eating rich, fatty foods before the Christian ritual of fasting for lent season. This year, Mardi Gras will be on March 5th.

On March 8th join us to honor and celebrate women for International Women's Day.

From March 20 - April 1, Holi , a Hindi and Sikh spring religious festival is observed in India, Nepal and Sri Lanka.

March 31 is International Transgender Day of Visibility . Aimed to bring awareness to transgender people and their identities.

Annual Black History Month Program

In collaboration with the Student National Medical Association, the ODI will commemorate Black History Month with the Annual Black History Month Program. Attendees will be treated to musical selections and a special address from a keynote speaker.

We are excited to announce that we will begin our celebration for International Women's Day with a special guest speaker, Hala Sabry D.O. Dr. Sabry is a board certified Emergency Medicine physician and founder of Physicians Moms Group (PMG). The PMG mission is to provide resources, a platform to network, and an opportunity to share information with like-minded individuals. The PMG network includes over 71,000 women physicians of all specialties from all over the nation!

Recent Events
Aspirations in Medical Professions

We enjoyed hosting Spring and Westfield High School for the first AMP session of 2019. Students heard from representatives including admissions plus the medical, nursing, and dental schools. The day included hands-on activities such as learning to take blood pressure and introductions to equipment. Thank you to all of our medical student volunteers! Something the Lord Made

What better way to spend a Friday afternoon than enjoying popcorn, lunch, and a movie? While watching this captivating film starring Alan Rickman and Mos Def, students learned about breakthroughs in the Blue Baby Syndrome treatment in Something the Lord Made .

The Division of Geriatric and Palliative Medicine is where Dr. Paulino has found his passion in medicine. His main goals are to optimize patients quality of life and alleviate suffering as well as teach learners specialized approaches. He shares his journey from Manila, Philippines to UTHealth.
Resident


Being the first in her family to attend medical school, Dr. Hopkins found her fire to become a passionate physician through mentors and sought-out experiences. She welcomes the melting pot of Houston and not only cares for children in pediatrics but realizes the family is a major component of healing.
Student


Growing up, Mary always knew she wanted to save lives and never questioned if she would be a doctor only how she would go about it. Duality comes naturally to her being a former division one student athlete, so joining the MD-PhD program was a no-brainer. Her mother continues to be her inspiration.
