NETC Medical Assistant student Mamie Herring, 20, of Dillon, practices blood drawing on a simulation mannequin at the Dillon Campus. | |
|
Fall is a busy time for Northeastern Technical College’s senior medical assistant students who are wrapping up their courseload in the field.
It’s not the easiest time for them as most juggle families and work along with furthering their education and broadening their skill sets for a starter career in the medical field.
NETC Instructor Latanyia Hunter’s Medical Assistant class discussed their experiences in the program, which The Roundup will be cataloguing through the rest of the semester.
During Fall 2023, Mamie Herring, 20, began clinical work at McLeod Orthopedics in Florence, S.C. – a more specialized practice than she was used to.
Her day job was working in urgent care as she balances work, school, and burgeoning family life being recently engaged.
“I love it,” the Dillon native said. “It’s a different experience.”
Herring says she’s doubling up her education in the field learning how bones and ligaments work and how they often are worn or damaged.
Anatomy classes, should Herring continue through NETC’s health programs, are required for an associates of nursing degree (ADN) that would put her in the registered nursing program.

Trailblazers inch close to Madden playoff spot
Trailblazer Billy Thompson gained ground entering the playoffs Oct. 17 scoring a win against Fort Scott Community College in Madden, bringing his Tier 1 record to 2-4.
“Despite his record Thompson still has a small chance of making the postseason,” NETC Esports Head Coach Tyler Nolan. “There are three teams with two wins in our group, one is Thompson's Week 7 opponent.”
With a win this week against Carl Albert State, and a little help from other teams in the group, Thompson could make the playoffs as the fourth seed from his group, Nolan said.

“We still have some work to do as they lost the match 3-0, bringing their record to 0-2,” NETC Head Coach Tyler Nolan said.
With each player having little competitive experience, the squad looks to build some team chemistry as they head into Week 3, he said.

In Overwatch, NETC took on Pratt Community College of Pratt, Kansas, Oct. 17 in Week 2 of Tier 2 play suffering another lopsided 3-0 loss bringing their record to 0-2.

Blaze named editor of The Roundup
Northeastern Technical College named mascot Blaze as the editor of its weekly newsletter The Roundup.
Blaze, originally hired in 2019 as NETC’s mascot, expands his duties at the school from morale booster and representative to engaging and expanding Northeastern Technical College brand into the school service area.
“I am truly honored to lead this esteemed publication into its next chapter,” Blaze said. "I'm dedicated to maintaining our commitment to delivering informative and engaging content while bringing fresh ideas and perspectives to our readers."
In his public appearances, Blaze has not been the conversationalist even though he is the first in his den to comprehend human language.
“With the advent of new communication technologies, I, as a wolf, can now better serve the school,” Blaze said. "And, more important, you."

Article Heading
First, thank you for clicking open The Roundup.
Second, share it.
The Roundup is a work in progress; for those who have been checking out the newsletter, the look has gone through many changes since August and will be experimental – boring is not a word that describes technical colleges, and neither should our communications to you.
The overall goal of The Roundup is to be informative, not just reminding you about events on our campuses (those are important, too) but also to help spark some ideas to help your future or pass along to somebody you know to help them.
One of the inspirational parts of NETC is its students.
NETC Instructor Latonyia Hunter’s senior medical assistant students spoke openly about their experiences in the course but one of the takeaways is how each student comes from varying points in their lives.
The age range in this one class is 20 to 46 with one student barreling down her pathway to becoming a nurse practitioner she made up her mind to do in elementary school to a retired law enforcement officer who begins her second career.
What they all have in common is that they are taking a chance on themselves and allowed NETC to be a vehicle to get them to their next stop.
The Roundup will be publishing all of their stories. Even if you or somebody you know isn’t interested in the medical field – the message resonates and hopefully inspires a spark.
Yours,
Blaze.
